Extcap executables require libwsutil.dll from the program directory.
These were loaded by setting the PATH environment variable, but this
is not thread-safe (and caused sporadic tests failures as a result).
Use SetDllDirectory instead, this also prevents loading DLL files
from arbitrary directories in PATH.
To make this work, the search logic for Npcap has to be modified to
avoid relying on SetDllDirectory. This implies that Npcap cannot be
used on Windows 7 anymore until KB2533623 (July 2011) is applied.

libwireshark and libwiretap have their INTERFACE link dependencies
changed to the required set.
libwsutil keeps a default public visibility. Further work may
show some unneeded link requirements.
The executable dependencies are adjusted accordingly.

When Wireshark uses a synchronous spawn (e.g., to launch an extcap)
it would be nice to be able to see what command line is constructed
to launch the process, and to see what comes back. The output will
go to the g_log.

JSON-GLib was added in v2.9.0rc0-201-g511c2e166a, but is no longer
necessary since we have a home-grown JSON dumper (wsutil/json_dumper.h).
Remove the remaining traces and additionally remove GObject from
FindGLIB2.cmake since it was only added for JSON-GLib.

The (optional) JSON-GLib library adds dependencies on GObject, GIO. For
statically linked oss-fuzz builds it also adds libffi and more. To avoid
these dependencies, replace JSON-GLib by some custom code. This allows
`tshark -G elastic-mapping` to be enabled by default without extra deps.
API design goals of the new JSON dumper library:
- Small interface without a lot of abstraction.
- Avoid memory allocations if possible (currently none, but maybe
json_puts_string will be replaced to improve UTF-8 support).
- Do not implement parsing, this is currently handled by jsmn.
Methods to open/close array/objects and to set members are inspired by
the JsonGlib interface. The interfaces to write values is inspired by
the sharkd code (json_puts_string is also borrowed from that).
The only observed differences in the tshark output:
- JSON-GLib ignores duplicates, json_dumper does not and may produce
duplicates and currently print two "ip.opt.sec_prot_auth_unassigned".
- JSON-GLib adds a space before a colon (unimportant formatting detail).
- (Not observed, but UTF-8 strings will be wrong like bug 14948.)
A test was added to catch changes in the tshark output. I also fuzzed
json_dumper with libFuzzer + UBSAN/ASAN and fixed an off-by-one error.

Rename wsjson_unescape_json_string to json_decode_string_inplace
(inspired by the g_base64_decode_inplace name). Rename
wsjson_is_valid_json to json_validate (inspired by g_unichar_validate).
Ideally json_parse is inlined with its user (sharkd_session.c), but that
requires exporting the jsmn_init and jsmn_parse functions... Hence the
dependency on jsmn.h remains in wsjson.h.

Check if data is available on stderr before doing a blocking read() to
avoid an infinite read loop when having less data than STDERR_BUFFER_SIZE.

The purpose of this function is to check if a configuration file exists
and has at least one entry which is not a comment.
Use this when building the list of profiles where the user can copy
configuration from, to avoid listing profiles with empty files or files
with only comments.

Doing so for command-line programs means that the argument list doesn't
ever get converted to the local code page; converting to the local code
page can mangle file names that *can't* be converted to the local code
page.
Furthermore, code that uses setargv.obj rather than wsetargv.obj has
issues in some versions of Windows 10; see bug 15151.
That means that converting the argument list to UTF-8 is a bit simpler -
we don't need to call GetCommandLineW() or CommandLineToArgvW(), we just
loop over the UTF-16LE argument strings in argv[].
While we're at it, note in Wireshark's main() why we discard argv on
Windows (Qt does the same "convert-to-the-local-code-page" stuff); that
means we *do* need to call GetCommandLineW() and CommandLineToArgvW() in
main() (i.e., we duplicate what Qt's WinMain() does, but converting to
UTF-8 rather than to the local code page).

With autotools, it was possible that the binary was located in a .libs
directory, but with CMake the executables directory and data directory
are the same (except macOS with app bundles). Use this property to get
rid of the hard-coded build directory. Helps with reproducible builds.

CMake and Wireshark libraries to easily configure the libwireshark
dependency with:

The Remarks section in WaitForMultipleObjects describes what kind of
handles the function can wait for. Pipe handles are not listed there.
The problem was introduced in c18459e66e
While it might be possible to setup overlapped reads on the pipe handles
and then wait on overlapped events, it would result in quite complex
code. As a tradeoff, simply keep peeking at the pipes every 100 ms.

On Windows the code calling extcap worked as follows:
1. Create stdout and stderr pipes with default buffer size
2. Execute extcap redirecting output to the pipes
3. Wait for extcap process to exit
4. Read the data from stdout pipe
This resulted in deadlock when the extcap wrote more data than the pipe
could buffer. This was especially seen with USBPcap as it is quite
normal to have plenty of USB devices connected.
Fix the issue by contantly reading the stdout data and storing it in
GString. To prevent similar deadlock on the stderr, the stderr data is
being constantly monitored as well (and discarded).

The WireGuard dissector will need X25519 to enable decryption, add a
Gcrypt implementation that implements the NaCl/Sodium interface.
While inspired by the MPI example in t-cv25519.c, note subtle but
important correctness/interoperability fixes: add a check for infinity
(gcry_mpi_ec_get_affine) and handle short values from gcry_mpi_print.
The last issue is ugly, perhaps the high level API (gcry_pk_decrypt)
should be used instead (which < 2% slower than this MPI implementation).
(Both issues were found through fuzzing.)
As for alternative options, Sodium is superior but would be a new
dependency. For some older performance and usability notes (comparing
crypto_scalarmult_curve25519_base (note "_base") against others), see

Performance comparison on Ubuntu 18.04 (i7-3770) between Sodium 1.0.16
against Gcrypt 1.8.3 and Gcrypt 86e5e06a (git master, future 1.9.x) by

Sodium (sandy2x): 1.4x faster than ref10
Sodium (ref10): 1 (baseline)
Gcrypt (git): 5x slower than ref10, 7x slower than sandy2x
Gcrypt (1.8.3): 17x ref10, 24x sandy2x (took 65 seconds)

Multi-configuration generators (such as Xcode or VS) append the current build configuration to most paths (eg. Debug/Release). Currently this results in inconsistent paths for the application bundle and the included command line tools. This commit sets the correct path information for multi-configuration generators for macOS application bundles. The standard Makefile behaviour is untouched.
One Windows specific configuration was changed, as it was conflicting with these changes. This needs to be checked before merging.
Additionally the wrapper scripts are omitted for Xcode, as the path to the binaries depends on the configuration chosen in Xcode. Therefore it is not viable to create these scripts in the cmake run.

caputils/ws80211_utils.c contains a re-definition of the linux kernel's
nla_for_each_nested() macro that applies the correct casts to allow
compilation with a C++ compiler.
Make this definition public by moving it into a new wsutil/netlink.h
file. Include the kernel's original definition before we overwrite it. This
way, it's not necessary for a .c file to include wsutil/netlink.h after
the system includes.
Use our nla_for_each_nested() version in extcap/dpauxmon.c to squelch the

sys/stat.h and sys/types.h date back to V7 UNIX, so they should be
present on all UN*Xes, and we're assuming they're available on Windows,
so, unless and until we ever support platforms that are neither UN*Xes
nor Windows, we don't need to check for them.
Remove the CMake checks for them, remove the HAVE_ values from
cmakeconfig.h.in, and remove all tests for the HAVE_ values.

On Windows, epan/addr_resolv.c has a different definition of structures
"hashipv4_t" (and "hashipv6_t") because the size of the "ip" member is
dependent on "WS_INET_ADDRSTRLEN". A mismatch resulted in two different
structures where the "name" field got shifted (resulting in empty names
in the resolved addresses table due to leading nul bytes).
Since including ws2tcpip.h for the appropriate definition results in
various compile errors (config.h, packet-dcerpc-misc.h, ...) and the
larger definition is actually not needed, just use constants again.

These directories have had trailing slashes for years and users seem to
rely on it, so restore this assumption for backwards compatibility. The
underlying API function (Dir.persconffile_path()) is not changed because
trailing slashes were not documented for that function.
For consistency, ensure that all Lua Dir functions return paths without
trailing slashes.

Valgrind considers the "cpuid" instruction to always depend on inputs from eax
and ecx, even though it's only a subset of values of eax for which ecx is
relevant. If ecx is undefined when cpuid is executed, the outputs of cpuid
will be considered undefined.
Instead of suppressing the resulting uninitialised-value warning (the
suppression for which is now out-of-date anyway, now that
register_all_protocols is moved to a worker thread), let's simply set ecx to
zero in ws_cpuid.
Testing done: Built Wireshark on Linux amd64. Before this change, running
"tools/valgrind-wireshark.sh ./test/captures/dhcp.pcap" with
valgrind-3.12.0.SVN on Debian 9.4 amd64 would yield the following Valgrind
error:

Have it take a format and argument list as arguments, and have the
formatting done inside the reporting code. That way, we're not relying
on any particular wmem scope working.
If WIRESHARK_ABORT_ON_DISSECTOR_BUG is set, try to add the message to
the crash information (currently only supported in macOS), and print it
to the standard error, before crashing. We won't necessarily have a
usable crash dump to analyze, so we can't rely on that to find the cause
of the crash.

Add ws_pipe_kill_child_on_exit, which associates a child process handle
with a job object that has the JOB_OBJECT_LIMIT_KILL_ON_JOB_CLOSE
flag set.
Call it when we create a process in ws_pipe_spawn_sync and
ws_pipe_spawn_async. Note that we might want to use it elsewhere.

Previously there were three different pipe validity checks:
PID != WS_INVALID_PID, PID != 0 and stdin != 0. This resulted in
using/closing file descriptors which might be owned by something else.
When no GeoIP databases are defined, mmdb_resolve_stop would be called
to close the pipe and set PID to WS_INVALID_PID. stdin is however not
cleared and future invocations would try to close the previous fd.

A gconstpointer is a "pointer to const void", so it should be cast to
"pointer to const XXX". A "pointer to const pointer to plugin" is a
"plugin *const *".
C's declaration syntax is not one of its strong points. There's a
reason why the cdecl program, and the Web site that uses it,
http://cdecl.org, exists (as the tag line says, "C gibberish <->
English"), and why I used it to make sure I got this working.

Except for the one directory that (currently) has "not yet clean" files,
epan/dissectors, we don't need a separate variable to keep track of the
"clean" source files.
In the cases where not all files were in CLEAN_FILES, put them into the
variable used to enable -Werror or its equivalent.

HKDF (RFC 5869) is a standard construct used in TLS 1.3, QUIC and
OSCORE, generalize it for use outside the TLS dissector.
Since none of the users need the "context" (formerly "hash_value")
field, remove the parameter.

Make plugins.c the source of truth for plugin names. Where plugins
reside and what they do are two different things, so split the plugin
directory and description into two separate elements.
CMake creates portable[1] builds on Windows and macOS. That is, the
build-time directory layout is the same as the installation directory
layout. Adjust various plugin paths macOS accordingly.
[1] You have to run osx-app.sh on macOS to prepare the application
bundle, but the goal is to create a directory/bundle that can be moved
or copied to a different system and run in the new location.

CentOS 6 ships with glib 2.28.8 which do not support
g_ptr_array_new_full (make-taps/make-dissectors) and need to link with
wsutil for glib-compat.
g_thread_new was only introduced with GLib 2.32 (not 2.31), so adjust
the check accordingly. Abort in case thread creation fails (as
documented). Properly initialize threads or it will abort on runtime
(this also requires linking epan with gthreads in CMake, autotools
already includes it with GLIB_LIBS).

Ask, in a comment, why we're doing PeekNamedPipe() when we're trying
to read everyting in the pipe, up to the EOF, into a string.
On UN*X, do the same "read up to an EOF and then NUL-terminate the
result" stuff that we did on Windows; nothing guarantees that, on all
UN*Xes, in all circumstances, until the end of time, world without end,
amen, we can do one read and get the entire string.

subdirectories, give libwiretap and libwireshark init routines that
load the plugins, and have them scan the appropriate subdirectories
so that we don't even *try* to, for example, load libwireshark plugins
in programs that only use libwiretap.
Compiled plugins are stored in subfolders of the plugin folders, with
the subfolder name being the Wireshark minor version number (X.Y). There is
another hierarchical level for each Wireshark library (libwireshark, libwscodecs
and libwiretap).
The folder names are respectively plugins/X.Y/{epan,codecs,wiretap}.
Currently we only distribute "epan" (libwireshark) plugins.

Join the protocol registration threads so that they call g_thread_unref
which in turn detaches/terminates the thread. This gets rid of many TSan
and DRD errors here. The remaining ones appear to be false positives.
Add g_thread_new to glib-compat (untested).

This sets the scope of the static build option to Wireshark support
libraries only.
Before the patch:
Static plugins don't work with CMake and autotools.
autotools static build is broken, and most likely will always be, as
building Wireshark all-static is difficult and time-consuming.
After the patch:
For CMake Wireshark will be built with static or shared libraries and
dynamic plugins. Everything just works. CMake apparently doesn't want
you building static and shared libraries at the same time.
For autotools Wireshark will be built with shared libraries by default.
--disable-shared and --enable-static options work as usual. Dlopened
plugins are not built if --disable-shared is given to configure (to
disable shared libraries). This is a limitations imposed by libtool.
Tested on Linux. This removes broken support for building plugins
statically.

We require support for AF_INET/AF_INET6 to run and assume this is available
on all supported platforms. If and when reality clashes with that assumption just
avoid aborting. Errors are to be expected as long as they don't produce a crash.

It defines a ws_in4_addr type, which is intended to hold IPv4 addresses
in network byte order, and some macros to test for IPv4 addresses in the
local network control block and multicast IPv4 addresses.
Use those macros in places where dissectors had their own code for that
purpose.

Autotools has the very useful feature by design of allowing the user
to override the default build flags (you break it you keep it).
Apparently CMake applies COMPILE_OPTIONS target property after
CMAKE_{C,CXX}_FLAGS so that doesn't work here. Prepend our flags to those
variables instead to make it work then.
Specific target flag overrides can still be added with COMPILER_OPTIONS
(e.g: generated files with -Wno-warning) but this is less effective and
then we're back at the point where this overrides user flags. It's less
of a concern though.

Only plugins built for the same feature release (X.Y) are assured binary
compatibility. Make sure we don't try to run unsuitable code and, if so,
warn the user. This might happen for example if the user manually copies
a binary plugin to the wrong folder, intentionally or by accident.
I'm using "release version" to loosely mean not a patch release
(i.e: a feature release).

If a plugin is repeated we destroy the GModuleHandle in plugins_scan_dir()
but we have already added the entry points to the list of registered
plugins.
Check for repeated plugins before adding it to the list of registered
plugins, not after.
Don't check for both name and version, check only for repeated names.
Give the plugin callback a more descriptive name.

Put plugins in CMake build dir with a version subdir. This avoids some
weird special cases, however running with autotools from build dir
displays the wrong global folder in about->folders. Unfortunately
the hack to run from the autotools build dir is troublesome.
Various fixes for Windows builds.
Try to fix also build dir issue loading plugins on macOS with
ENABLE_APPLICATION_BUNDLE (blind).

Display separate entries for binary plugins and lua scripts.
This is explained in the user guide, that the binary folder is
a subfolder of the lua folder, but it's probably a good idea to be more
explicit about it, at the risk of cluttering the interface a bit.
Move GeoIP information down because it seems the least important.
Add helper functions to provide plugin version subdir.
Change some #ifdefs while at it for legibility.

Installing machine code to XDG_CONFIG_HOME is problematic.
Use ~/.local/lib/wireshark/plugins instead.
XDG_CONFIG_HOME should be architecture independent. This allows copying the

The Wireshark User Guide seems to say:
Global lua plugins are in $pkglibdir/plugins
Personal lua plugins are in XDG_CONFIG_HOME/plugins
Global binary plugins are in $pkglibdir/plugins/$version
Personal binary plugins are in XDG_CONFIG_HOME/plugins/$version
Fix code to match that. This is a backward-incompatible change
for global lua plugins and personal binary plugins.
Adds a version subfolder to the personal plugin folder for binary plugins.
This allows for safe upgrades and side-by-side installations
with different prefixes (they no longer use the same personal dir).

If a variable is initialized in a loop body or an if clause or a switch
clause, declare it inside the loop body/clause, and de-initialize it
before leaving the loop body/clause.
De-initialize the gnutls_pkcs12_t before leaving rsa_load_pkcs12(), so
as not to leak it.
Always leave the per-bag loop by "goto done", even if we're not within
an inner loop, to make it clearer what we're doing.
We initialize the bag structure at the beginning of that loop body;
de-initialize it at the end.
If we leave the loop without a private key, and we don't have an error
message, the error is "we didn't find a PKCS8 key"; report that.

Ensure that rsa_load_pem_key() and rsa_load_pkcs12() always return an
error message string if they fail, so that
1) they don't return NULL without supplying an error string;
2) they don't supply an error string if they succeed.
If either of them fails, report the error; if there's no error string,
report an unknown error (that shouldn't happen, but the wsutil/rsa.c
code needs more cleanup before I'll believe it can't happen).
While we're at it, clean up some of those error strings, return NULL
rather than 0 as the failure case from rsa_load_pkcs12() as we do in
rsa_load_pem_key() (they mean the same thing, but NULL makes it a bit
clearer), and de-initialize the private key structure in
rsa_load_pem_key() if we fail (so that we don't leak memory).

Loading PEM and PKCS#11 keys was being done in static functions
in packet-ssl-utils.c. These were moved to wsutil, with prototypes
in a new <wsutil/rsa.h> header. This adds gnutls as optional
dependency to wsutil.
The RSA decryption helper was also moved and is now provided in
<wsutil/wsgcrypt.h>.
This allows more dissectors to access this functionality.

XTEA is a 64-bit block Feistel cipher with a 128-bit key and a suggested
64 rounds. It's used by the MMORPG Tibia for encrypting game server traffic.
Usual XTEA treats the blocks as big-endian. Tibia treats them as little
endian, therefore both versions are provided.

Have a header file that defines HAVE_REMOTE if HAVE_PCAP_REMOTE is
defined, and then includes pcap.h. Replace all other includes of
pcap.h, and the definition of HAVE_REMOTE, with includes of that file.

Add a "report a warning message" routine to the "report_err" code in
libwsutil, and rename files and routines appropriately, as they don't
only handle errors any more.
Have a routine read_enabled_and_disabled_protos() that reads all the
files that enable or disable protocols or heuristic dissectors, enables
and disables them based on the contents of those files, and reports
errors itself (as warnings) using the new "report a warning message"
routine. Fix that error reporting to report separately on the disabled
protocols, enabled protocols, and heuristic dissectors files.
Have a routine to set up the enabled and disabled protocols and
heuristic dissectors from the command-line arguments, so it's done the
same way in all programs.
If we try to enable or disable an unknown heuristic dissector via a
command-line argument, report an error.
Update a bunch of comments.
Update the name of disabled_protos_cleanup(), as it cleans up
information for disabled *and* enabled protocols and for heuristic
dissectors.
Support the command-line flags to enable and disable protocols and
heuristic dissectors in tfshark.

Avoid anachronisms, however; there was no "macOS 10.0" or even "OS X
10.0", for example. It was "Mac OS X" until 10.8 (although 10.7 was
sometimes called "OS X" and sometimes called "Mac OS X"), and it was "OS
X" from 10.8 to 10.11.

There is *no* need to do it around an assignment statement. (We
*probably* don't need to do it around g_free(), but better safe than
sorry - maybe some memory allocator makes system calls to hand regions
of the address space back.)

In create_persconffile_profile, pf_dir_path_copy needs to be allocated
separately since the subsequent call to get_dirname is destructive. Add
back a call to g_strdup. This should hopefully fix a crash in the Win32
buildbot.

Removed all guards for HAVE_LIBGCRYPT, change autotools and CMake to
error out if it is not available. Update release notes, developer
documentation and README with the new status. Clarify relation with
GnuTLS in macosx-setup.sh. Install Libgcrypt via brew script.
Motivation for this change is that many dissectors depend on Libgcrypt
and having it optional increases the maintenance burden (there have been
several compile issues in the past due to the optional status).
Furthermore, wsutil has crypto code that can be replaced by Libgcrypt.

Just as we include <windows.h> on Windows to get HANDLE defined, include
<sys/types.h> on UN*X to get pid_t defined.
We don't seem to need this (yet) on the master and 2.2 branches, but it
looks as if it might be necessary on the 2.0 branch. Do it everywhere.

Removed unused macros/functions that are apparently imported from
LibTomCrypt, only LOAD32L and STORE32L are needed. Remove code that
tries to distinguish between little/big endian, since WORDS_BIGENDIAN
was never defined, this would never have worked on big endian anyway.
Remove the special ROR "optimization" for GCC on i386, modern compilers
are able to optimize it to exactly the same thing. The generic
LOAD32L/STORE32L macros are less optimized (as can be seen in the
generated code), but this was not noticable in the mean running time.
Tested with the packet capture from bug 3232, the result is the same:
tshark -ocorosync_totemnet.private_keys:example.com -r corosync-totemsrp--key:example.com--2nodes.pcap -Vx

The record sequence number is 64-bit, not 32-bit. This applies to all
SSLv3/TLS/DTLS versions. Without this fix, after about four million
records, the wrong MAC is calculated (for TLS 1.2) or decryption will
fail (for TLS 1.3).

Have a wsutil/socket.h file, for inclusion by everything that uses
sockets, that contains the UN*X-vs-Windows #includes and #defines to
hide some UN*X-sockets vs. Winsock API differences. That stuff mostly
comes from from extcap/extcap-base.h; have that file just include
wsutil/socket.h rather than defining that stuff itself.
Include it in sharkd_daemon.c. Use socklen_t for the size of things to
pass to bind() as the last argument; wsutil/socket.h defines it as int
on Windows.
Ignore sharkd in Git.

Fixes Lua on macOS, tested with an out-of-tree build:
WS_BIN_PATH=$PWD/run ../wireshark/test/test.sh -s wslua
Previously programs that were ran from the build directory would load
data files (radius/, diameter/, init.lua) from the source directory.
Then in the case of Lua, files were loaded from the program directory
($BUILDDIR/run/init.lua on Linux) or source directory
(sSOURCEDIR/epan/wslua/console.lua).
On macOS, this does not work for Lua since files are installed into
$BUILDDIR/run/Wireshark.app/Contents/Resources/share/wireshark/init.lua
instead. Since CMake always copies data files (radius, console.lua,
etc.) into the build directory, make get_datafile_dir() return this
"run" directory instead.

- code saves G.711 only, all other codecs are saved as silence with correct duration
- code is ready to include other codecs
- code supports 8000 Hz sampling rate only, other rates are rejected with warning
- bidirectional stream (forward and reverse) creates stereo .au file

- save operation is slower than before because it is set of seek() - one per each codec sample

- as it is - each stream is saved from its beginning, no aling
- to start of each other - later stream is prepended with silence
- align saved audio to beginning of capture file - each stream is prepended with silence
- save to raw works correctly now - only payload is saved
- old code was inserting G.711 silence time to time to raw data

Make the init_progfile_dir() call unconditionally, even if plugins
aren't supported, as that doesn't necessarily mean nobody uses the
directory containing the executable.
Report the error the same way in all programs, and free the error string
after we're finished with it.
Make the error - and the comment before the code - reflect what
init_progfile_dir() is actually doing (the goal is to get the full
pathname of the directory *containing* the executable; that's generally
done by getting the pathname of the executable and stripping off the
name of the executable, but that's won't necessarily always be the
case). Also note for TShark that we won't be able to capture traffic,
just as we do for Wireshark (if we don't have the pathname of the
program file, we don't have a pathname to use to find dumpcap).
Have the plugin scanner just fail silently if we weren't able to get the
plugin directory path, so we don't have to worry about calling it if
init_progfile_dir() fails.
Clean up white space while we're at it.

And some comments in the case where we're converting the result of
time() - if your machine's idea of time predates January 1, 1970,
00:00:00 UTC, it'll crash on Windows, but that's not a case where a
*file* can cause the problem due either to a bad file time stamp or bad

The libjsmn was imported into the tree and enhanced with a new
function. This change splits it into the "original" libjsmn and
an addictional module wsjsmn that contains the new function.
This will make easier to port within the tree future versions
of the library.

Not all uses of atoi() or various strto* routines in Wireshark expect
the string to contain *only* a number, so not all uses should require
that the byte after the number be a '\0'. Have the ws_strto* routines
take a "pointer a pointer set to point to the character after the
number" argument, and have the callers do the appropriate checks of the
character after that.
This fixes the VMS trace reading code so that it can read those files
again.
The get_ routines are handed command-line arguments, so they *do* expect
the string to contain only a number; have them check to make sure the
byte after the number is a '\0'.

That's another failure that can occur if you're trying to load a
libwireshark plugin in a program that doesn't use libwireshark if, for
example, references to an undefined symbol don't prevent the module from
being loaded in the first place.

-1 is not an unsigned number. For that matter, neither is +1;
"unsigned" means "without a sign", and they both have signs.
ANSI C's strto{whatever} routines - even the ones that supposedly are
for "unsigned" values - and the GLib routines modeled after them allow a
leading sign, so we have to check ourselves.

That's a less gross hack to suppress load failures due to not having
libwiretap than providing a no-op failure-message routine, as it at
least allows other code using a failure-message routine, such as
cmdarg_err() and routines that call it, to be used.
We really should put libwiretap and libwireshark plugins into separate
subdirectories of the plugin directories, and avoid even looking at
libwireshark plugins in programs that don't use libwireshark.

In the current code many functions have been used for convertion

Setting our compiler warning flags in CMAKE_C_FLAGS does not allow
using different flags per target.
Allow for that possibility by setting the internal WS_WARNINGS_{C,CXX}_FLAGS
and using the COMPILE_OPTIONS property to set them.
This change is just setting mechanism and there should be no difference
in generated warnings.
The check_X_compiler_flag cmake test is changed to test each flag individually.
We need a list, not a space separated string, and the aggregate test is not
significant.

particularly on Windows. Start adding performance tests to wmem_test so
that we can see the differences.

Many of the complaints from checkAPI.pl for use of printf are when its embedded
in an #ifdef and checkAPI isn't smart enough to figure that out.
The other (non-ifdef) use is dumping internal structures (which is a type of
debug functionality)
Add a "ws_debug_printf" macro for printf to pacify the warnings.

Copy wsutil/wsprintf.h from change 16537. Update it to use functions
appropriate to Visual C++ >= 2015, < 2015, and everything else. Add
notes about specific API issues.
Update epan/expert.c to use ws_snprintf, since the VS profiler shows it
as a minor hot spot. This reduces load time for a large-ish capture from
~14s to ~12s here.
Migrate a previous column-utils change.

Npcap decided not to add "C:\Windows\System32\Npcap" to
system PATH in the installation any more (starting from
Npcap 0.07 r14). So this patch needs to be applied, otherwise
Wireshark will not find Packet.dll (the error message will
only say wpcap.dll is missing, but actually is Packet.dll
missing).

It has nothing to do with controlling privileges; it only tests whether
the NPF or Npcap service (driver) is running, so it belongs in caputils.
While we're at it, fix its signature (in C, a function with no arguments
must have "void" as the argument list, for backwards compatibility with
pre-function-prototype C), and close the handles it opens, so we don't
have open handles leaked.

The Single UNIX Spec says AF_INET and AF_INET6 are defined by
<sys/socket.h>, which means you *should* include it if you want those
defines, and it doesn't look as if DragonFly BSD's <netinet/in.h>
includes it.

The first case handles the two time stamps having the same seconds
value, so, in the subsequent cases, they're guaranteed not to have the
same seconds value; check for b->secs < a->secs, not for b->secs <= a->secs
(the two tests will always get the same value, as b->secs != a->secs),
to make it clearer what's being done.

If we detect that we're writing to a TTY and that it doesn't support
UTF-8, convert our output to the current code page on UNIX/Linux or
to UTF-16LE on Windows. This helps to ensure that we don't fill users'
screens with mojibake, along with scrubbing invalid output.
Add a note about our output behavior to the TShark man page. Add a note
about the glyphs we should and shouldn't be using to utf8_entities.h.

This allows keeping the code-sharing with the static linking.
This "fixes" a hypothetical ABI mismatch with wsutil and avoids pulling more
external dependencies to wsutil than strictly necessary.
A nice side-effect is that libwsutil no longer depends on version.h.

Replace some function calls with their non-deprecated equivalents so
that we can remove _CRT_NONSTDC_NO_DEPRECATE from CMakeLists.txt and
config.nmake.
Leave _CRT_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE in place. Removing it failed with 145
warnings and 72 errors.
Note that we could probably improve startup performance by using wmem
in diam_dict.*.

Fix a bunch of memory leaks, mainly because extcap_base_cleanup is not
called on most execution paths and because memory allocated for options
were not freed.
Additionally, randpkt will now fail if no option is given (it previously
returned 0 if --capture was missing). Logic using "goto" is introduced
with the idea that a program should fail (ret = EXIT_FAILURE) unless
proven otherwise.
Now none of the extcap programs are leaking:

Add pkg-config 0.29.1 macros to our distribution. This makes the
aclocal-flags script obsolete, since we are already not using GLib
autoconf macros.
ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS need only be defined on the top-level Makefile.am.

The locale information returned by setlocale() can be a very long unbroken
string. This makes the text dialog too wide without line wrapping and in
some cases it spans outside the screen border.
Add some commas to improve readability and help GTK+ render it properly.

This new function abstracts the creation of a list of the local
interfaces that will be used by future extcaps to generate specific

Remove mostly obsolete aclocal macros. Make GTK build flags a strict superset
of GLib flags. Use GTK build variables for GTK GUI and GLib elsewhere. Add
dependency flags explicitly instead of using WS_CPPFLAGS.
Some minor improvements and fixes for missing/unnecessary variables (no impact
on our test builds).

Add an option to decode the packet bytes from base64 or zlib compressed.
Also add configurable start byte and end byte to make it possible to
decode a subset of bytes. It's also possible to select a range in ASCII
view and select "Show selected" from the context menu to make a subset.
In ASCII view a null terminator is replaced by UTF8 symbol for NULL,
and a CR is replaced by UTF8 symbol for carriage return. This is done
to make it possible to "Show selected" from the context menu.

Clang's ASAN reported an ODR violation when plugins were loaded. Sure
enough, symbols did actually get loaded twice:

GNU coding standards recommend against it and automake is designed
around it.
This allows overriding the global build flags using AM_CFLAGS, etc.,
or per object flags, something that is difficult or impossible currently
because of automake precedence rules.

Output from BASE_HEX et al has always been zero-padded to according to
the field type - 8 digits for FT_UINT32, etc.
When the field has a bitmask, this is definitely not appropriate - the
field type is used to indicate the size of the bitfield container, and
tells us nothing about the size of this field.
Instead, determine the actual size of the field by inspecting the
bitmask, and output the corresponding number of hex digits.

The "-Wwrite-strings" flag produces nuisance warnings. These warnings are
not useful, they're impossible to fix in a sane way and therefore are being
handled with casts of static strings to (char *).
This just moves the warning to [-Wcast-qual] and a compiler pragma is
in turn required (and used) to squelch that warning.
Remove the Wwrite-strings warning. Let that responsibility fall on the
programmer (as is done by casting).

Disable shorten-64-to-32 in ws80211_create_on_demand_interface,
which calls NLA_PUT_STRING, which passes the output of strlen to an
int parameter. NLA_PUT_STRING is defined in netlink/attr.h so there's
not much we can do to fix it directly.
Suppress -Wpragmas before suppressing warnings in gcc so that we can
use DIAG_OFF with clang-only warnings.

Have wsutil/file_util.h include them on UN*X, just as it includes io.h
on Windows, so we can have a rule of "if you do file operations, include
<wsutil/file_util.h> and use the routines in it".
Remove includes of unistd.h, fcntl.h, and sys/stat.h that aren't
necessary (whether because of the addition of them to wsutil/file_util.h
or because they weren't needed in the first place).

It ends up dragging in libwireshark headers, which programs not linking
with libwireshark shouldn't do. In particular, including
<epan/address.h> causes some functions that refer to libwireshark
functions to be defined if the compiler doesn't handle "static inline"
the way GCC does, and you end up requiring libwireshark even though you
shouldn't require it.
Move plurality() to wsutil/str_util.h, so that non-libwireshark code can
get it without include epan/packet.h. Fix includes as necessary.

It will create all the relevant directories (if it can), using
g_mkdir(), which is a wrapper for mkdir() on UN*X - just as ws_mkdir()

wsutil/filesystem.c uses dladdr (when available), but does not declare a
dependency on it. Adding it fixes a CMAKE_C(XX)_FLAGS=-fuse-ld=gold
build failure:

Even if the result of the negative shift (in TIME_T_MIN) is not used
because the signedness check happens before, it still causes a
compile-time warning. Fix this by shifting on an unsigned value, then
truncate by casting it.
While at it, remove a "fix for broken SCO compiler", it might not apply
to us (fingers crossed).

The CMake dumpbabi targets collectively copy over 800 files. Do
that when when we build the actual targets instead of at configure

fseek() to the end, followed by ftell(), is a bit of an odd way to get
the file size. Use ws_fstat64() instead.
Check that the file is a regular file, while we're at it. This means we
don't have to check before opening.

Add the wireless toolbar to the Qt UI.
Start adding AirPcap support to ui/80211_utils. Add FCS validation
routines to ws80211_utils.
Move a bunch of AirPcap routines that require epan from caputils to
ui/gtk. They were required for driver key management, which we'll
leave to the AirPcap Control Panel in the Qt UI.
Move frequency-utils to wsutil.

Define WS_INVALID_PID to be the appropriate "there is no process" value.
On UN*X, -1 works; the "pid" is actually a HANDLE for the process on
Windows, so INVALID_HANDLE is appropriate.
Cast HANDLE to intptr_t in the _cwait() call.

The MSVC rules for searching for headers are a huge barrel of fun; it
appears that, for some files that need the MSVC <process.h> to declare
getpid(), they're getting our <wsutil/process.h> instead, as that's in
the current directory. Rename it to avoid the collision.

That's not valid in C99, at least, if the value is negative or if the
shift count is the number of bits in the value - 1, and we might get
compile-time or run-time complaints about that.
Also, make bit masks unsigned; to quote a run-time error reported in
https://www.wireshark.org/lists/wireshark-dev/201504/msg00084.html
"left shift of 1 by 31 places cannot be represented in type 'int'", so
use type "unsigned int" instead, by shifting 1U rather than 1 left.

Add a variant of filetime_to_nstime() that takes a value that's like a
FILETIME but in units of nanoseconds rather than tenths of a
microsecond, and use that. (It looks as if they might just get FILETIME
values from the OS and multiply them by 100, as the nanosecond-FILETIME
values appear to be multiples of 100 in the captures I've seen, but they
might have chosen nanosecond resolution in case they need to support a
higher-resolution time stamp source, so we don't assume that the values
will always be a multiple of 100.)

Make sure the target location for extcap executables and extcap_dir
match on OS X.
Set the extcap directory to Contents/MacOS/extcap. The Mac Developer
Library documentation doesn't explicitly define "Resources", but
examples include data files and not executables. It does state that
executables shouldn't go into PlugIns.
Make sure we rpathify androiddump.

Revert parts of g2ef72cb and g7710da4 so that the NSIS installer once
again places plugins in $INSTDIR\plugins\$VERSION. This matches the
behavior of Autotools and previous Windows installers, and reduces the
chances of a version mismatch if the user happens to install a custom
plugin.
Leave the development plugin path unversioned. Leave the extcap path
unversioned for now.

dladdr() takes a void * as a code pointer; have init_progfile_dir() do
so, and do the casting in the calls. We don't care about the signature
of the function whose address we're passing, we just want to pass a
pointer to *something* in the main program.

If not, we can't use SSE 4.2, as we need to be able to include it in
files that use tvb_pbrk_compile()/tvb_pbrk_exec() even if they're not
compiled with -msse4.2 (most files aren't, as we need to isolate SSE 4.2
instructions to a small bit of code that uses them only if running on
hardware that supports them).

The clang on my machine doesn't; just do "format" instead. (The best
way to handle this may be to do the formatting ourselves, so that we can
get thousands separators on *all* platforms, regardless of whether its
printf formatter supports it.)

CMake has "normal" and "cache" variables, and unexpected things happen
if you have a normal and a cache variable with the same name.
Apparently, check_c_compiler_flag() currently sets its result variable
as a cache variable, and set(), by default, sets it as a normal
variable.
This means that there are two different HAVE_SSE4_2 variables, and the
top-level CMakeLists.txt looks at the cache variable when it creates
config.h; this means that if the nmmintrin.h test fails, config.h still
says we have SSE 4.2.
Instead, use separate variables for the "compiler can be made to
generate SSE 4.2 code" test and the "nmmintr.h works" test; that way we
don't have to worry about normal vs. cache variables (and don't have to
worry about CMake changing what type of variable particular
functions/macros set).

This combines the SSE4.2 instructions usage, with pre-compiled
pattern searching usage, for a faster pbrk search method.
Testing against large files of HTTP and SIP, there is about
a 5% performance improvement by using pre-"compiled" patterns
for guint8_pbrk() instead of passing it the search string and
having it build the match array every time.
Similar to regular expressions, "compiling" the pattern match array
in advance only once and using the "compiled" patterns for
the searches is faster than compiling it every time.
