The distinction between the different kinds of capture utility
may not warrant a special subfolfer for each, and sometimes the
distinction is not be clear or some functions could stradle
multiple "categories" (like capture_ifinfo.[ch]).
Simplify by having only a generic 'capture' subfolder. The
separate CMake libraries are kept as a way to reuse object code
efficiently.
Remove the editor modeline blocks from most of the source files in ui/qt
by running
perl -i -p0e 's{ \n+ /[ *\n]+ editor \s+ modelines .* shiftwidth= .* \*/ \s+ } {\n}gsix' $( ag -g '\.(cpp|h)' )
then cleaning up the remaining files by hand.
This *shouldn't* affect anyone since
- All of the source files in ui/qt use 4 space indentation, which
matches the default in our top-level .editorconfig
- The one notable editor that's likely to be used on these files and
*doesn't* support EditorConfig (Qt Creator) defaults to 4 space
indentation.
Have it return WTAP_FILE_TYPE_SUBTYPE_UNKNOWN, rather than an
undecorated -1, if the hash table lookup fails.
Check for that as a return value, and pop up a "file an issue" dialog if
WTAP_FILE_TYPE_SUBTYPE_UNKNOWN is returned.
This should squelch Coverity CID 1473325; the error Coverity reports is
bogus, as negative file type/subtype values are check for before we try
to use them as suffixes, but this should catch the "this should not
happen" case that caused the error to pop up.
Register the pcap and pcapng file types/subtypes rather than hardwiring
them into the table.
Call the registration routines for them directly, rather than through a
generated table; they're always supposed to be there, as some code in
Wireshark either writes only one of those formats or defaults to writing
one of those formats. Don't run their source code through the
registration-routine-finder script.
Have the file type/subtype codes for them be directly exported to the
libwiretap core, and provide routines to return each of them, to be used
by the aforementioned code.
When reporting errors with cfile_write_failure_message(), use
wtap_dump_file_type_subtype() to get the file type/subtype value for the
wtap_dumper to which we're writing, rather than hardcoding it.
Have the "export PDU" code capable of supporting arbitrary file
types/subtypes, although we currently only use pcapng.
Get rid of declarations of now-static can_write_encap and
dump_open routines in various headers.

in ui/qt. As discussed in #16812, the UTF8_ macros were required at one
time because we only allowed ASCII in our source code. However, that
requirement has since been relaxed and Qt's translation framework
doesn't handle concatenating strings and macros very well.
Add a new top-level view that shows each packet as a series of diagrams
similar to what you'd find in a networking textook or an RFC.
Add proto_item_set_bits_offset_len so that we can display some diagram
fields correctly.

Use the QT text codec support to add charset conversions for all character
encodings supported by QT to Show Packet Bytes and Follow Stream (Save As
will convert to UTF-8.) Note that this is dynamic and the exact list will
depend on the version of QT and if libicu support is enabled. This does
make the list of codecs pretty long, so hopefully it shows up well on all
the different QT styles.
This does not yet support when multibyte characters span more than one packet
in Follow Stream, though the current code doesn't do that for UTF-8 or UTF-16
already. This is probably most useful for HTTP captures.

Instead of having programs that use the capchild library define
functions with known names, with the library routines calling back
routines with those names, have function pointers for those callbacks in
the capture_session structure, and have capture_session_init() set them.
Make the callback routines in TShark and in the ui library static.

This implements multi-selection for the PacketList. It
allows multiple lines to be selected, and either drag/drop
them to a text editor or use Ctrl/Cmd+C to copy the content
to a clipboard.
Opening the context menu disables the selection, and it
does not change the underlying currently selection. This is
done on purpose, as multi-selection is a copy-task only
functionality at this point
Export & Print work as expected, exporting just the selected
items. Same goes for the copy menu, which has the additional
entries for copying the list elements

Add support for automatic updates using the Sparkle framework. Add
FindSparkle.cmake and associated CMake plumbing. Add a public key and
other info to Info.plist.in. Add ui/macosx/sparkle_bridge.{h,m}, which
wraps the Sparkle API. Make code that's specific to WinSparkle
Windows-only.
Add Sparkle installation steps to the macos-setup scripts. Sparkle
prints a warning if your bundle is unsigned (which is the case during
development) so disable installing it by default.
Updating here takes a long time. We might be able to fix that by
shipping our DSYMs separately.

Currently push pop is propagated by a massive load of signals
which partly are also propagated through parent objects.
This moves the status handling to WiresharkApplication, also
pathlining future moves to move status to different classes or
use additional methods of status information

When using the "Create a new file automatically" feature the capture in
Wireshark will stop and start, but the extcap utility will continue run
as normal. Ensure the control channels are kept when doing this.
Rename the unused capture_session.session_started to session_will_restart
to detect this.

Show the dialogs asynchronously so no new event loops are created. This
not only simplifies stack traces (reduces the nesting level) but also
prevents hard to debug problems (eg. Bug 15743) from happening.

Using a simple (type *) cast on g_list_next results in a warning
with modern compilers "old-style cast"
Adding a warning for g_list_next and data access to avoid the warning

The pointer returned by create_tempfile() must not be freed. As the

Do not call showHideMainWidgets() in initShowHideMainWidgets() because
this will override loaded recent values on startup.
Setting checked and visible based on recent values is done in layoutPanes()
and updateRecentActions().
This affects the following View settings: Main Toolbar, Filter Toolbar,
Wireless Toolbar, Status Bar, Packet List, Packet Details and Packet Bytes.
Also always hide empty_pane because it's never useful to show this.

Update our various welcome page style sheets when we receive an
ApplicationPaletteChange event.
It looks like ApplicationPaletteChange is the proper way to detect a
system-wide theme change, since we can infinitely recurse if we hold
things wrong inside a regular PaletteChange event (I'm guessing setting
CSS background and foreground colors were the culprits in this case).
Switch from PaletteChange to ApplicationPaletteChange everywhere.

Add support for ".template" icons, which are masked against the current

Make the time stamp precision a 4-bit bitfield, so, when combined with
the other bitfields, we have 32 bits. That means we put the flags at
the same structure level as the time stamp precision, so they can be
combined; that gets rid of an extra "flags." for references to the flags.
Put the two pointers next to each other, and after a multiple of 8 bytes
worth of other fields, so that there's no padding before or between them.
It's still not down to 64 bytes, which is the next lower power of 2, so
there's more work to do.

Don't set the display filter combo's minimum size. This lets us show
more filter expression buttons.
Clear the filter expression toolbar before redrawing it. This gets rid
of a leftover artifact here on macOS.

Move all the compressed-file type stuff to wiretap/file_wrappers.c.
Rename wtap_compressed_file_extension() to
wtap_compression_type_extension() for consistency with the other
compression-type-extension routine names.
Move the declarations of the compression-type-extension routines in the
header file.
wtap_compression_type_extension() now returns NULL for
WTAP_UNCOMPRESSED; there's no need to special-case it.
Get rid of the now-unused wtap_compression_type_supported() and
WTAP_NUM_COMPRESSION_TYPES.

Add wtap_compressed_file_extension(), which returns NULL for
WTAP_UNCOMPRESSED and the appropriate file extension for other
compression types.
Add wtap_compression_type_supported(), which returns TRUE for
WTAP_UNCOMPRESSED and all supported compression types and FALSE
otherwise. ("Supported" means "the code can decompmress files in that
compression format and can write files in that compression format", so
WTAP_GAIP_COMPRESSED is supported iff libwiretap is built with zlib.)
In MainWindow::fileAddExtension, instead of checking for
WTAP_GZIP_COMPRESSED and using ".gz" as the extension, use the extension
returned by wtap_compressed_file_extension() for the compression type.

This:
1) means that we don't have to flag the compression argument with a
comment to indicate what it means (FALSE doesn't obviously say "not
compressed", WTAP_UNCOMPRESSED does);
2) leaves space in the interfaces in question for additional compression
types.
(No, this is not part 1 of an implementation of additional compression
types, it's just an API cleanup. Implementing additional compression
types involves significant work in libwiretap, as well as UI changes to
replace "compress the file" checkboxes with something to indicate *how*
to compress the file, or to always use some other form of compression).

To mimic the behaviour we have with remote controls, we
hide the wireless toolbar if it cannot be used, instead
of displaying an empty toolbar with the information that
it is not supported
