Get rid of a stray semicolon, as it upsets Sun^WOracle Studio's C

compiler.

Clean up escape_xml_chars() a bit, so that there's no extra unreached
"return s;", and so that it's clearer that it runs until it hits a NUL. 
(XXX - are there GLib routines that will do this?)
