Move the top-level user-guide.adoc and developer-guide.adoc to their
respective source directores. This is in preparation for a future
toolchain revamp.
Move the wsug_graphics directory to wsug_src/images and wsdg_graphics
directory to wsdg_src/images. Copy common_graphics/* to the each images
directory and remove common_graphics. We only have five admonition
graphics; duplicating them lets us remove some build config overhead.
Rename wsluarm.adoc to wsdg_src/wsdg_lua_support.adoc.
Remove a dummy file.
Tested visually and by enabling `--failure-level=WARN`.
Add a drop-down combobox for UATs, including User DLTs, that
have a choice of dissectors. Make the combobox editable, which
will provide suggestions, and pass things through to the existing
UAT validation for dissectors. (It's a very long list, especially
with 1717 entries, including 530 just from various BT GATT UUIDs,
so being able to still type it in seems useful.)
Dissectors are not protocols. Rename the UAT field from PROTO to
DISSECTOR where used. Update the column names and long descriptions
to use dissector instead of protocol in dissectors that used this.
There may at some point be UATs that want protocols instead of
dissectors, but that's not what the current behavior does and
none of the current dissectors that use the existing types want.
Update the documentation to use "dissector" instead of "protocol."
Put the names of the actual current three Ethernet dissectors.
Clarify that the "ip" dissector actually tries IPv4 and IPv6,
instead of just IPv4.
UAT entries are backwards and forwards compatible with versions
without this change.
Fix#18836.
Gtk popped up a search box when typing in the tree view.
Most places in Qt, a Search: field was added to the dialog.
Looks possible to buffer keystrokes and do a string search in Qt.
Default value is 400ms (even on Windows). Average typing speed of
200 cpm = 300ms per character = too close to 400ms when searching
the protocol name in Preferences -> Protocols.
The <...> syntax for literals, intended to be as generic as
possible, unintentionally introduced an ambiguity with the
relational expression "a < b or a > c".
Literals are values like numbers, bytes, IPv6 addresses or, one
could imagine, UNC paths for example, if an FT_UNC type were to
be added in the future.
We could use a new unique symbol like @...@ but the <...>
syntax is very recent and may not be necessary with ":xxx" so
just remove it.
A byte array can be explicitly declared by prefixing with a colon. It
is not as generic but the main ambiguity that this new syntax attempted
to solve is bytes vs protocol names. We don't want to introduce a new
reserved symbol for now, until other requirements if any are more clear.
Fixes#18418.
This removes unparsed name resolution during the semantic
check because it feels like a hack to work around limitations
in the language syntax, that should be solved at the lexical
level instead.
We were interpreting unparsed differently on the LHS and RHS.
Now an unparsed value is always a field if it matches a
registered field name (this matches the implementation in 3.6
and before).
This requires tightening a bit the allowed filter names for
protocols to avoid some common and potentially weird conflicting
cases.
Incidentally this extends set grammar to accept all entities.
That is experimental and may be reverted in the future.
Use "True" or "TRUE" instead of "true" and remove case insensivity.
Same for false. This should serve to differentiate booleans a bit
more from protocol names, which should be using lower-case.
For the upcoming 4.0 release, switch the default file format for
text2pcap to pcapng from pcap, to match other tools and the GUI
behavior. Update the documentation and release notes appropriately.
Deprecate the old -n flag; since pcapng is the default this has no
effect. Changing the output capture file format is supported with
the -F option, consistent with the other command line tools.
Related to #18009.
The same hierarchy of protocols can appear multiple times in a frame,
for example if there are multiple PDUs for a protocol that begin in
that frame. Keep track of the last frame where we incremented our
stat node and use that to only increment it once per frame.
Add a "total number of PDUs with this hierarchy" statistic and
display it as a new final column in the GUI. Update the User Guide.
In the purpose of doing this, get rid of temporary variables and
increment the ph_stats_t members directly, since we pass that
into our functions already, and thus have access to the current
packet count.
Fix#17553. Fix#18034. Fix#12565.
Instead of saying a leading colon will make any token a literal
value, say it is part of the syntax of bytes arrays. This is
useful to write bytes without a separator, and other potentially
ambiguous formats.
The restriction in meaning to bytes and simple numeric values
should make the rules for handling a leading colon (specifically
ommiting it or not) saner without much loss of functionality.
