Here's a revised version. This re-introduces the set_bits() function
from ppc64, which I removed because I thought it was unused (it exists
on no other arch). In fact it is used in the powermac interrupt code
(but not on pSeries).
- We use LARXL/STCXL macros to generate the right (32 or 64 bit)
instructions, similar to LDL/STL from ppc_asm.h, used in fpu.S
- ppc32 previously used a full "sync" barrier at the end of
test_and_*_bit(), whereas ppc64 used an "isync". The merged version
uses "isync", since I believe that's sufficient.
- The ppc64 versions of then minix_*() bitmap functions have changed
semantics. Previously on ppc64, these functions were big-endian
(that is bit 0 was the LSB in the first 64-bit, big-endian word).
On ppc32 (and x86, for that matter, they were little-endian. As far
as I can tell, the big-endian usage was simply wrong - I guess
no-one ever tried to use minixfs on ppc64.
- On ppc32 find_next_bit() and find_next_zero_bit() are no longer
inline (they were already out-of-line on ppc64).
- For ppc64, sched_find_first_bit() has moved from mmu_context.h to
the merged bitops. What it was doing in mmu_context.h in the first
place, I have no idea.
- The fls() function is now implemented using the cntlzw instruction
on ppc64, instead of generic_fls(), as it already was on ppc32.
- For ARCH=ppc, this patch requires adding arch/powerpc/lib to the
arch/ppc/Makefile. This in turn requires some changes to
arch/powerpc/lib/Makefile which didn't correctly handle ARCH=ppc.

I recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of
sched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h
from module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h
by ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after
this disentangling (patch to follow later).
However, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this.
In order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as
possible, I've split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for
i386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real
patch. This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only
adding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other. So if any
hunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. My scripts
will pick it up again in the next round.

First step in pushing down the page_table_lock. init_mm.page_table_lock has
been used throughout the architectures (usually for ioremap): not to serialize
kernel address space allocation (that's usually vmlist_lock), but because
pud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel expect caller holds it.
Reverse that: don't lock or unlock init_mm.page_table_lock in any of the
architectures; instead rely on pud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel to take
and drop it when allocating a new one, to check lest a racing task already
did. Similarly no page_table_lock in vmalloc's map_vm_area.
Some temporary ugliness in __pud_alloc and __pmd_alloc: since they also handle
user mms, which are converted only by a later patch, for now they have to lock
differently according to whether or not it's init_mm.
If sources get muddled, there's a danger that an arch source taking
init_mm.page_table_lock will be mixed with common source also taking it (or
neither take it). So break the rules and make another change, which should
break the build for such a mismatch: remove the redundant mm arg from
pte_alloc_kernel (ppc64 scrapped its distinct ioremap_mm in 2.6.13).
Exceptions: arm26 used pte_alloc_kernel on user mm, now pte_alloc_map; ia64
used pte_alloc_map on init_mm, now pte_alloc_kernel; parisc had bad args to
pmd_alloc and pte_alloc_kernel in unused USE_HPPA_IOREMAP code; ppc64
map_io_page forgot to unlock on failure; ppc mmu_mapin_ram and ppc64 im_free
took page_table_lock for no good reason.

This patch fixes a numbers of issues regarding to that both 8xx and 82xx
began to use ppc_sys model:
- Platform is now identified by default deviceless SOC, if no
BOARD_CHIP_NAME is specified in the bard-specific header. For the list
of supported names refer to (arch/ppc/syslib/) mpc8xx_sys.c and
mpc82xx_sys.c for 8xx and 82xx respectively.
- Fixed a bug in identification by name - if the name was not found,
it returned -1 instead of default deviceless ppc_spec.
- fixed devices amount in the 8xx platform system descriptions

Change the phys_mem_access_prot() function to take a pfn instead of an
address. This allows mmap64() to work on /dev/mem for addresses above 4G
on 32-bit architectures. We start with a pfn in mmap_mem(), so there's no
need to convert to an address; in fact, it's actively bad, since the
conversion can overflow when the address is above 4G.
Similarly fix the ppc32 page_is_ram() function to avoid a conversion to an
address by directly comparing to max_pfn. Working with max_pfn instead of
high_memory fixes page_is_ram() to give the right answer for highmem pages.

Convert core 8xx drivers to use in_xxxbe/in_xxx macros instead of direct
memory references.
Other than making IO accesses explicit (which is a plus for readability), a
common set of macros provides a unified place for the volatile flag to
constraint compiler code reordering.
There are several unlucky places at the moment which lack the volatile
flag.

Depending on how GCC is built, GCC 4 may generate altivec instructions without
user explicitly requesting vector operations in the code. Although this is a
performance booster for user applications, it is a problem for kernel.
This patch explicitly instruct GCC to NOT generate altivec instructions while
building the kernel.
Here are some test cases I ran.
(1) build gcc 4.0.1 with '--with-cpu=7450 --enable-altivec
--enable-cxx-flags=-mcpu=7450', and use this gcc to build kernel WITHOUT
this kernel patch. Kernel fail to boot up on a 7450 board because of
altivec instructions in kernel.
(2) build gcc 4.0.1 with "--with-cpu=7450 --enable-altivec
--enable-cxx-flags=-mcpu=7450", and use this gcc to build kernel WITH this
kernel patch. Kernel boot up on a 7450 board without any problem.
(3) build gcc 4.0.1 with "--with-cpu=750 --enable-cxx-flags=-mcpu=750",
and use this gcc to build kernel with or without this kernel patch.
Kernel boot up on a 7450 board without any problem.
This patch should also work with GCC 3 or even earlier GCC 2.95.3.

The recent merge of fpu.S broken the handling of fpscr for
ARCH=powerpc and CONFIG_PPC64=y. FP registers could be corrupted,
leading to strange random application crashes.
The confusion arises, because the thread_struct has (and requires) a
64-bit area to save the fpscr, because we use load/store double
instructions to get it in to/out of the FPU. However, only the low
32-bits are actually used, so we want to treat it as a 32-bit quantity
when manipulating its bits to avoid extra load/stores on 32-bit. This
patch replaces the current definition with a structure of two 32-bit
quantities (pad and val), to clarify things as much as is possible.
The 'val' field is used when manipulating bits, the structure itself
is used when obtaining the address for loading/unloading the value
from the FPU.
While we're at it, consolidate the 4 (!) almost identical versions of
cvt_fd() and cvt_df() (arch/ppc/kernel/misc.S,
arch/ppc64/kernel/misc.S, arch/powerpc/kernel/misc_32.S,
arch/powerpc/kernel/misc_64.S) into a single version in fpu.S. The
new version takes a pointer to thread_struct and applies the correct
offset itself, rather than a pointer to the fpscr field itself, again
to avoid confusion as to which is the correct field to use.
Finally, this patch makes ARCH=ppc64 also use the consolidated fpu.S
code, which it previously did not.
Built for G5 (ARCH=ppc64 and ARCH=powerpc), 32-bit powermac (ARCH=ppc
and ARCH=powerpc) and Walnut (ARCH=ppc, CONFIG_MATH_EMULATION=y).
Booted on G5 (ARCH=powerpc) and things which previously fell over no
longer do.

Talk about buggy firmware... the OF on the Longtrail returns 0
from the claim client service rather than -1 when the claim fails.
It also has no device_type on the /memory node and blows up if
the output buffer for package-to-path is too big.
This also fixes a bug with calling alloc_up with align == 0, where
we did _ALIGN_UP(alloc_bottom, 0) which will end up as 0.
Lastly, we now check the return value (in r3) from calling the
prom, and return -1 from call_prom if we get a negative value back.
That is supposed to indicate that the requested client service
doesn't exist.

This changes the parameters for i8259_init so that it takes two
parameters: a physical address for generating an interrupt
acknowledge cycle, and an interrupt number offset. i8259_init
now sets the irq_desc[] for its interrupts; all the callers
were doing this, and that code is gone now. This also defines
a CONFIG_PPC_I8259 symbol to select i8259.o for inclusion, and
makes the platforms that need it select that symbol.

Previously it claimed 7MB starting at the 9M point and loaded the
kernel there. That meant that prom_init put the flattened device
tree above 16M. On the 601 that caused the early device tree scan
to fail, since only 16MB are mapped with BATs on the 601. Moving
this down to 8MB allows prom_init to put the flattened device tree
between 15M and 16M, so it works on the 601.

Merge ppc32 and ppc64 versions of thread_info.h. They were pretty
similar already, the chief changes are:
- Instead of inline asm to implement current_thread_info(),
which needs to be different for ppc32 and ppc64, we use C with an
asm("r1") register variable. gcc turns it into the same asm as we
used to have for both platforms.
- We replace ppc32's 'local_flags' with the ppc64
'syscall_noerror' field. The noerror flag was in fact the only thing
in the local_flags field anyway, so the ppc64 approach is simpler, and
means we only need a load-immediate/store instead of load/mask/store
when clearing the flag.
- In readiness for 64k pages, when THREAD_SIZE will be less
than a page, ppc64 used kmalloc() rather than get_free_pages() to
allocate the kernel stack. With this patch we do the same for ppc32,
since there's no strong reason not to.
- For ppc64, we no longer export THREAD_SHIFT and THREAD_SIZE
via asm-offsets, thread_info.h can now be safely included in asm, as
on ppc32.
Built and booted on G4 Powerbook (ARCH=ppc and ARCH=powerpc) and
Power5 (ARCH=ppc64 and ARCH=powerpc).

This patches the ppc32 and ppc64 versions of the headers and .c files
with helper functions for manipulating the performance counting
hardware. As a side effect, it removes use of the term "perfmon" from
ppc32, thus avoiding confusion with the unrelated performance counter
interface from HP Labs also called "perfmon".
Built, but not booted, for g5, pSeries, iSeries, and 32-bit Powermac
with both ARCH=powerpc and ARCH=ppc{,64} as appropriate.

We now use the merged time.c for both 32-bit and 64-bit compilation
with ARCH=powerpc, and for ARCH=ppc64, but not for ARCH=ppc32.
This removes setup_default_decr (folds its function into time_init)
and moves wakeup_decrementer into time.c. This also makes an
asm-powerpc/rtc.h.

Glibc is about to get some new high precision timer stuff that relies on
the standard timebase of the PPC architecture.
However, some (rare & old) CPUs do not have such timebase and it is a
bit annoying to have your stuff just crash because you are running on
the wrong CPU...
This exposes to userland a CPU feature bit that tells that the current
processor doesn't have a standard timebase. It's negative logic so that
glibc will still "just work" on older kernels (it will just be unhappy
on those old CPUs but that doesn't really matter as distro tend to
update glibc & kernel at the same time).

I've noticed that the calculations for seg_size and nr_segs in
__dma_sync_page_highmem() (arch/ppc/kernel/dma-mapping.c) are wrong. The
incorrect calculations can result in either an oops or a panic when running
fsck depending on the size of the partition.
The problem with the seg_size calculation is that it can result in a
negative number if size is offset > size. The problem with the nr_segs
caculation is returns the wrong number of segments, e.g. it returns 1 when
size is 200 and offset is 4095, when it should return 2 or more.

This fixes up a variety of minor problems in compiling with ARCH=ppc
arising from using the merged versions of various header files.
A lot of the changes are just adding #include <asm/machdep.h> to
files that use ppc_md or smp_ops_t.
This also arranges for us to use semaphore.c, vecemu.c, vector.S and
fpu.S from arch/powerpc/kernel when compiling with ARCH=ppc.

Now instead of having a ppc_md function, we just have a variable
which says whether to do the i8259 irq canonicalization or not,
and set that variable on the platforms that need that. It looks
to me that radstone_ppc7d was trying to use irq canonicalization
for something else in a broken kind of way - it will need to be
fixed properly.

Older Macs which uses the VIA chip timers to calibrate the timebase used
some code that wouldn't work if HZ wasn't divisible by 100...
This fixes it at least for 250. Not totally perfect but should be
enough for now (so it at least works with the default value which is now
250).
There is still a potential issue with the core using CLOCK_TICK_RATE to
maintain xtime and CLOCK_TICK_RATE value on ppc32 is pure crap, but that
is a different problem, this patch at least brings us back to our
previous situation.

This adds the new iBook G4 (manufactured after July 2005) to the
PowerMac models table. The model name (PowerBook6,7) is taken from a
12" iBook, I don't know if it also matches the 14" version. The patch
applies to a vanilla 2.6.13.2 kernel.

The old 550Mhz titanium powerbook can switch to a lower frequency
(500Mhz). A user has been repeately reporting overtemp conditions on his
machine at high speed so this simple patch adds support to PowerMac
cpufreq for this machine. The difference in frequency isn't big but seem
enough to fix that user's problems. The patch has been around for some
time now and doesn't seem to cause any problem, so I suppose it could go
in now.

This merges ppc_ksyms.c, puts back the actual do_execve call in
sys_execve, makes init_MMU call find_end_of_memory rather than
ppc_md.find_end_of_memory (every platform has a device tree
with a /memory node now, right?) and fixes some problems with the
mpic initialization on newworld powermacs.

Additionally, made call_setup_cpu check to see if the cpu_setup pointer
is NULL or not before calling the function. This lets remove the dummy

Merged cputable.h between ppc32 and ppc64. In doing this removed support
for the BEGIN_FTR_SECTION/END_FTR_SECTION macros in C code since they
dont compile correctly. C code should use cpu_has_feature(). This is
based on Arnd Bergmann's initial patch.

This creates the directory structure under arch/powerpc and a bunch
of Kconfig files. It does a first-cut merge of arch/powerpc/mm,
arch/powerpc/lib and arch/powerpc/platforms/powermac. This is enough
to build a 32-bit powermac kernel with ARCH=powerpc.
For now we are getting some unmerged files from arch/ppc/kernel and
arch/ppc/syslib, or arch/ppc64/kernel. This makes some minor changes
to files in those directories and files outside arch/powerpc.
The boot directory is still not merged. That's going to be interesting.

The SMU is the "system controller" chip used by Apple recent G5 machines
including the iMac G5. It drives things like fans, i2c busses, real time
clock, etc...
The current kernel contains a very crude driver that doesn't do much more
than reading the real time clock synchronously. This is a completely
rewritten driver that provides interrupt based command queuing, a userland
interface, and an i2c/smbus driver for accessing the devices hanging off
the SMU i2c busses like temperature sensors. This driver is a basic block
for upcoming work on thermal control for those machines, among others.

Current -git tree doesn't build when enabling oprofile on a non-bookE CPU
(like on a PowerMac for example). While there is no performance counter
support for these CPUs implemented yet, it's still nice to be able to use
the timer based sampling, and that got broken.

This patch merges bug.h into include/asm-powerpc. Changed the data
structure for bug_entry such that line is always an int on both 32 and
64-bit platforms; removed casts to int from the 64-bit trap code to
reflect this.

This is a revised patch to merge asm-ppc*/hardirq.h.
It removes some unnecessary #includes, but then requires
the addition of #include <asm/irq.h> in PPC32's hw_irq.h
much like ppc64 already does. Furthermore, several
unnecessary #includes were removed from some ppc32 boards
in order to break resulting bad #include cycles.
Builds pSeries_defconfig and all ppc32 platforms except
the already b0rken bseip.

We always use the inlined versions of local_irq_enable, local_irq_disable,
local_save_flags_ptr, and local_irq_restore on ppc32 so the non-inlined
versions where just taking up space.

Merged ppc_asm.h between ppc32 & ppc64. The majority of the file is
common between the two architectures excluding how a single GPR is
saved/restored and which GPRs are non-volatile.
Additionally, moved the ASM_CONST macro used on ppc64 into ppc_asm.h.

Added ppc_sys device and system definitions for PowerQUICC I devices. This
will allow drivers for PQI to be proper platform device drivers. Currently
sys section contains only MPC885 and MPC866. Identification should be done
with identify_ppc_sys_by_name call, with board-specific "name" string
passed, since PQI do not have any register that could identify the SOC.

Several implementations were essentialy a common piece of C code using
the cmpxchg() macro. Put the implementation in one spot that everyone
can share, and convert sparc64 over to using this.
Alpha is the lone arch-specific implementation, which codes up a
special fast path for the common case in order to avoid GP reloading
which a pure C version would require.

Discard *.exit.text sections on runtime. We cannot do this on link time
because of the way BUG macros are implemented. If "__exit function" calls
one of those macros, __bug_table section will reference this function.
This is similar to ".altinstructions" situation on i386.
*.exit.data seems to be OK in this respect and is discarded on link
time.

When introducing the generic asm-offsets.h support the dependency
chain for the prepare targets was changed. All build scripts expecting
include/asm/asm-offsets.h to be made when using the prepare target would broke.
With the limited number of prepare targets left in arch Makefiles
the trivial solution was to introduce a new arch specific target: archprepare
The dependency chain looks like this now:
prepare

+--> prepare1
|
+---> prepare2
|
+--> prepare3
So prepare 3 is processed before prepare2 etc.
This guaantees that the asm symlink, version.h, scripts_basic
are all updated before archprepare is processed.
prepare0 which build the asm-offsets.h file will need the
actions performed by archprepare.
The head target is now named prepare, because users scripts will most
likely use that target, but prepare-all has been kept for compatibility.

This allows cpus to be off-lined on 32-bit SMP powermacs. When a cpu
is off-lined, it is put into sleep mode with interrupts disabled. It
can be on-lined again by asserting its soft-reset pin, which is
connected to a GPIO pin.
With this I can off-line the second cpu in my dual G4 powermac, which
means that I can then suspend the machine (the suspend/resume code
refuses to suspend if more than one cpu is online, and making it cope
with multiple cpus is surprisingly messy).

This is a patch that I have had in my tree for ages. If init causes
an exception that raises a signal, such as a SIGSEGV, SIGILL or
SIGFPE, and it hasn't registered a handler for it, we don't deliver
the signal, since init doesn't get any signals that it doesn't have a
handler for. But that means that we just return to userland and
generate the same exception again immediately. With this patch we
print a message and kill init in this situation.
This is very useful when you have a bug in the kernel that means that
init doesn't get as far as executing its first instruction. :)
Without this patch the system hangs when it gets to starting the
userland init; with it you at least get a message giving you a clue
about what has gone wrong.

This patch (written by me and also containing many suggestions of Arjan van
de Ven) does a major cleanup of the spinlock code. It does the following
things:
- consolidates and enhances the spinlock/rwlock debugging code
- simplifies the asm/spinlock.h files
- encapsulates the raw spinlock type and moves generic spinlock
features (such as ->break_lock) into the generic code.
- cleans up the spinlock code hierarchy to get rid of the spaghetti.
Most notably there's now only a single variant of the debugging code,
located in lib/spinlock_debug.c. (previously we had one SMP debugging
variant per architecture, plus a separate generic one for UP builds)
Also, i've enhanced the rwlock debugging facility, it will now track
write-owners. There is new spinlock-owner/CPU-tracking on SMP builds too.
All locks have lockup detection now, which will work for both soft and hard
spin/rwlock lockups.
The arch-level include files now only contain the minimally necessary
subset of the spinlock code - all the rest that can be generalized now
lives in the generic headers:

Booted and lightly tested on a500-44 (64-bit, SMP kernel, dual CPU).
Builds 32-bit SMP kernel (not booted or tested). I did not try to build
non-SMP kernels. That should be trivial to fix up later if necessary.
I converted bit ops atomic_hash lock to raw_spinlock_t. Doing so avoids
some ugly nesting of linux/*.h and asm/*.h files. Those particular locks
are well tested and contained entirely inside arch specific code. I do NOT
expect any new issues to arise with them.
If someone does ever need to use debug/metrics with them, then they will
need to unravel this hairball between spinlocks, atomic ops, and bit ops
that exist only because parisc has exactly one atomic instruction: LDCW
(load and clear word).

The following patch changes the usages of PVR_440* into strcmp's with the
cpu_name field, and removes the defines altogether. The Ebony portion was
briefly tested long ago. One benefit of moving from PVR-tests to string
tests in general is that not all CPUs can be on and be able to do this type
of comparison.

Modifies serial_init to get base baud rate from the rs_table entry instead
of BAUD_BASE. This patch eliminates duplication between the
SERIAL_PORT_DFNS macro and BAUD_BASE. Without the patch, if a port set the
baud rate in SERIAL_PORT_DFNS, but did not update BASE_BAUD, the BASE_BAUD
value would still be used.

Sanitized and fixed floppy dependencies: split the messy dependencies for
BLK_DEV_FD by introducing a new symbol (ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC), making
BLK_DEV_FD depend on that one and taking declarations of ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC
to arch/*/Kconfig. While we are at it, fixed several obvious cases when
BLK_DEV_FD should have been excluded (architectures lacking asm/floppy.h
are *not* going to have floppy.c compile, let alone work).
If you can come up with better name for that ("this architecture might
have working PC-compatible floppy disk controller"), you are more than
welcome - just s/ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC/your_prefered_name/g in the patch
below...

This patch cleans up a commonly repeated set of changes to the NTP state
variables by adding two helper inline functions:
ntp_clear(): Clears the ntp state variables
ntp_synced(): Returns 1 if the system is synced with a time server.
This was compile tested for alpha, arm, i386, x86-64, ppc64, s390, sparc,
sparc64.

This adds type-checking to pm_message_t, so that people can't confuse it
with int or u32. It also allows us to fix "disk yoyo" during suspend (disk
spinning down/up/down).
[We've tried that before; since that cpufreq problems were fixed and I've
tried make allyes config and fixed resulting damage.]

Add declaration and cacheable_memcpy(). I'll be needing this function in
new 4xx EMAC driver I'm going to submit to netdev soon.
IMHO, the better place for the declaration would be asm-powerpc/string.h,
unfortunately, ppc64 doesn't have this function, so asm-ppc/system.h is the
next best place.

Adds support for the two PCI busses on MPC83xx and the MPC834x SYS/PIBS
reference board.
The code initializes PCI inbound/outbound windows, allocates and registers
PCI memory/io space. Be aware that setup of the PCI buses on the PIBs
board is expected to be done by the firmware.

Add the ability to identify an SOC by a name and id. There are cases in
which the integer identifier is not sufficient to specify a specific SOC.
In these cases we can use a string to further qualify the match.

flush_dcache_icache_page() will be called on an instruction page fault. We
can't sleep in the fault handler, so use kmap_atomic() instead of just
kmap() for the Book-E case.

The 2nd serial port on the MPC8560 ADS was not being configured correctly
and thus could not be used as a console. Updated the defconfig for the
board to configure the proper SCC channel for the 2nd serial port.

This patch adds a field to struct ocp_func_emac_data that allows
platform-specific unsupported PHY features to be passed in to the ibm_emac
ethernet driver.
This patch also adds some logic for the Bamboo eval board to populate this
field based on the dip switches on the board. This is a workaround for the
improperly biased RJ-45 sockets on the Rev. 0 Bamboo.

PowerPC 40x and Book-E processors support a watchdog timer at the processor
core level. The timer has implementation dependent timeout frequencies
that can be configured by software.
One the first Watchdog timeout we get a critical exception. It is left to
board specific code to determine what should happen at this point. If
nothing is done and another timeout period expires the processor may
attempt to reset the machine.
Command line parameters:
wdt=0 : disable watchdog (default)
wdt=1 : enable watchdog
wdt_period=N : N sets the value of the Watchdog Timer Period.
The Watchdog Timer Period meaning is implementation specific. Check
User Manual for the processor for more details.

We run into problems if we blindly enable L2 prefetching without
checking that the L2 cache is actually enabled. Additionaly, if we
disable the L2 cache we need to ensure that we disable L2 prefetching.

The ppc and ppc64 trees are hopefully going to merge over time, so this
patch begins the process by creating a place for the merging of the
header files.
Create include/asm-powerpc (and move linkage.h into it from
asm-{ppc,ppc64} since we don't like empty directories). Modify the
ppc and ppc64 Makefiles to cope.

It has been reported that the way Linux handles NODEFER for signals is
not consistent with the way other Unix boxes handle it. I've written a
program to test the behavior of how this flag affects signals and had
several reports from people who ran this on various Unix boxes,
confirming that Linux seems to be unique on the way this is handled.
The way NODEFER affects signals on other Unix boxes is as follows:
1) If NODEFER is set, other signals in sa_mask are still blocked.
2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal is
still blocked. (Note: this is the behavior of all tested but Linux _and_
NetBSD 2.0 *).
The way NODEFER affects signals on Linux:
1) If NODEFER is set, other signals are _not_ blocked regardless of
sa_mask (Even NetBSD doesn't do this).
2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal being
handled is not blocked.
The patch converts signal handling in all current Linux architectures to
the way most Unix boxes work.
Unix boxes that were tested: DU4, AIX 5.2, Irix 6.5, NetBSD 2.0, SFU
3.5 on WinXP, AIX 5.3, Mac OSX, and of course Linux 2.6.13-rcX.
* NetBSD was the only other Unix to behave like Linux on point #2. The
main concern was brought up by point #1 which even NetBSD isn't like
Linux. So with this patch, we leave NetBSD as the lonely one that
behaves differently here with #2.

Comments in head.S suggest that the iSeries naca has a fixed address,
because tools expect to find it there. The only tool which appears to
access the naca is addRamDisk, but both the in-kernel version and the
version used in RHEL and SuSE in fact locate the NACA the same way as
the hypervisor does, by following the pointer in the hvReleaseData
structure.
Since the requirement for a fixed address seems to be obsolete, this
patch removes the naca from head.S and replaces it with a normal C
initializer.
For good measure, it removes an old version of addRamDisk.c which was
sitting, unused, in the ppc32 tree.

When we did the handle_mm_fault cleanup and get_user_page() race fixes,
handle_mm_fault turned into an inline function that called the real
__handle_mm_fault() code. The export needed for MOL on ppc wasn't
updated to match the new world order, though.
Turn it into a GPL export while at it, since this is all about internal
interfaces and MOL is GPL'd anwyay.
In yenta_socket, we default to using the resource setting of the CardBus
bridge. However, this is a PCI-bus-centric view of resources and thus needs
to be converted to generic resources first. Therefore, add a call to
pcibios_bus_to_resource() call in between. This function is a mere wrapper on
x86 and friends, however on some others it already exists, is added in this
patch (alpha, arm, ppc, ppc64) or still needs to be provided (parisc -- where
is its pcibios_resource_to_bus() ?).

Fix 44x early serial debugging for big RAM configurations (more than 512M).
We cannot use default OpenBIOS virtual mapping, because it interferes with
pinned TLB entry.
While we are at it, move early UART mapping to TLB slot 0, so it can
survive longer during boot process (slot 1 is used by the first ioremap
call, effectively killing UART mapping if it occupies this slot). Also,
change UART TLB entry size to 4K (256M is too much for a bunch of registers
:). Squash some warnings on the way.
Tested on Ebony and Ocotea with 1G of RAM.

On 8xx, in the case where a pagefault happens for a process who's not
the owner of the vma in question (ptrace for instance), the flush
operation is performed via the physical address.
Unfortunately, that results in a strange, unexplainable "icbi"
instruction fault, most likely due to a CPU bug (see oops below).
Avoid that by flushing the page via its kernel virtual address.

Typo bug that was using PCI1 defines instead of PCI2 when setting up the
second PCI bus controller on 85xx based systems. This hasn't been a real
issue since currently the PCI2 sizes are the same as the PCI1 sizes for
currently supported boards.

On PPC 8xx, the DataTLBMiss handler does not jump directly to the page
fault handler, as was the case in v2.4.
It instead loads an invalid TLB which causes a subsequent DataTLBError
exception.
The comment on top of it haven't been update to reflect the change, though.

The UARTs on the MPC824x are unique devices and really shouldn't be thought
of as a DUART. In addition, if both UARTs are in use we need to configure
the part to enable the 2nd UART since the pins for the UARTs are
multiplexed. Adds support to run the 824x Sandpoint with both UARTs if
desired.

machine_restart, machine_halt and machine_power_off are machine
specific hooks deep into the reboot logic, that modules
have no business messing with. Usually code should be calling
kernel_restart, kernel_halt, kernel_power_off, or
emergency_restart. So don't export machine_restart,
machine_halt, and machine_power_off so we can catch buggy users.

The following patch prevents the crash dump helper code found within kexec
from breaking ppc which still lacks crash dump functionality.
ksysfs crash_notes attribute handling was left under CONFIG_KEXEC for
simplicity although it is not strictly kexec related.
We provide here a dummy definition for crash_notes on ppc.

Create a new top-level menu named "Networking" thus moving
net related options and protocol selection way from the drivers
menu and up on the top-level where they belong.
To implement this all architectures has to source "net/Kconfig" before
drivers/*/Kconfig in their Kconfig file. This change has been
implemented for all architectures.
Device drivers for ordinary NIC's are still to be found
in the Device Drivers section, but Bluetooth, IrDA and ax25
are located with their corresponding menu entries under the new
networking menu item.

This converts the usage of struct of_match to struct of_device_id,
similar to pci_device_id. This allows a device table to be generated,
which can be parsed by depmod(8) to generate a map file for module
loading.
In order for hotplug to work with macio devices, patches to
module-init-tools and hotplug must be applied. Those patches are

Add explicit disabling of 440GP IRQ compatibility mode when configuring
440GX interrupt controller. This helps when board firmware for some reason
uses this compatibility mode and leaves it enabled. It breaks 440GX
interrupt code because it assumes native 440GX IRQ mode. People seems to
be continuously bitten by this.

As part of my timeofday rework, I've been looking at the NTP code and I
noticed that the PPC architecture is apparently misusing the NTP's
time_offset (it is a terrible name!) value as some form of timezone offset.
This could cause problems when time_offset changed by the NTP code. This
patch changes the PPC code so it uses a more clear local variable:
timezone_offset.

This patch adds the Freescale MPC86xADS board support. The supported
devices are SMC UART and 10Mbit ethernet on SCC1.
The manual for the board says that it "is compatible with the MPC8xxFADS
for software point of view". That's why this patch extends FADS instead of
introducing a new platform.
FEC is not supported as the "combined FCC/FEC ethernet driver" driver by
Pantelis Antoniou should replace the current FEC driver.

This patch was discussed at length on linux-pci and so far, the last
iteration of it didn't raise any comment. It's effect is a nop on
architecture that don't define the new pci_resource_to_user() callback
anyway. It allows architecture like ppc who put weird things inside of
PCI resource structures to convert to some different value for user
visible ones. It also fixes mmap'ing of IO space on those archs.

This patch removes CONFIG_PMAC_PBOOK (PowerBook support). This is now
split into CONFIG_PMAC_MEDIABAY for the actual hotswap bay that some
powerbooks have, CONFIG_PM for power management related code, and just left
out of any CONFIG_* option for some generally useful stuff that can be used
on non-laptops as well.

The Power Management Unit on PowerMacs is very sensitive to timeouts during
async message exchanges. It uses rather crude protocol based on a shift
register with an interrupt and is almost continuously exchanging messages with
the host CPU on laptops.
This patch adds a routine to the open_pic driver to be able to select a PMU
driver so that it bumps it's interrupt priority to above the normal level.
This will allow PMU interrupts to occur while another interrupt is pending,
and thus reduce the risk of machine beeing abruptly shutdown by the PMU due to
a timeout in PMU communication caused by excessive interrupt latency. The
problem is very rare, and usually just doesn't happen, but it is still useful
to make things even more robust.

The proposed _tlbie call at update_mmu_cache() is safe because:
Addresses for which update_mmu_cache() gets invocated are never inside the
static kernel virtual mapping, meaning that there is no risk for the
_tlbie() here to be thrashing the pinned entry, as Dan suspected.
The intermediate TLB state in which this bug can be triggered is not
visible by userspace or any other contexts, except the page fault handling
path. So there is no need to worry about userspace dcbxxx users.
The other solution to this is to avoid dcbst misbehaviour in the first
place, which involves changing in-kernel "dcbst" callers to use 8xx
specific SPR's.
Summary:
On 8xx, cache control instructions (particularly "dcbst" from
flush_dcache_icache) fault as write operation if there is an unpopulated
TLB entry for the address in question. To workaround that, we invalidate
the TLB here, thus avoiding dcbst misbehaviour.

This updates the CFQ io scheduler to the new time sliced design (cfq
v3). It provides full process fairness, while giving excellent
aggregate system throughput even for many competing processes. It
supports io priorities, either inherited from the cpu nice value or set
directly with the ioprio_get/set syscalls. The latter closely mimic
set/getpriority.
This import is based on my latest from -mm.

2. Remove all references to PF_FREEZE and PF_FROZEN from all

6. Clear potential race in refrigerator (provides an open window of PF_FREEZE
cleared before setting PF_FROZEN, recalc_sigpending does not check
PF_FROZEN).
This patch does not address the problem of freeze_processes() violating the rule
that a task may only modify its own flags by setting PF_FREEZE. This is not clean
in an SMP environment. freeze(process) is therefore not SMP safe!

Makes kexec_crashdump() take a pt_regs * as an argument. This allows to
get exact register state at the point of the crash. If we come from direct
panic assertion NULL will be passed and the current registers saved before
crashdump.
This hooks into two places:
die(): check the conditions under which we will panic when calling
do_exit and go there directly with the pt_regs that caused the fatal
fault.
die_nmi(): If we receive an NMI lockup while in the kernel use the
pt_regs and go directly to crash_kexec(). We're probably nested up badly
at this point so this might be the only chance to escape with proper
information.

of pages to relocate passed to relocate_new_kernel. And
I have added ppc_md.machine_crash_shutdown. To keep up with
the changes in the generic kexec infrastructure.

The following patch adds support for kexec on the ppc32 platform.
Non-OpenFirmware based platforms are likely to work directly without
additional changes on the kernel side. The kexec-tools userland package
may need to be slightly updated, though.
For OpenFirmware based machines, additional work is still needed on the
kernel side before kexec support is ready. Benjamin Herrenschmidt is
kindly working on that part.
In order for a ppc platform to use the kexec kernel services it must
implement some ppc_md hooks. Otherwise, kexec will be explicitly disabled,
as suggested by benh.
There are 3+1 new ppc_md hooks that a platform supporting kexec may
implement. Two of them are mandatory for kexec to work. See
include/asm-ppc/machdep.h for details.
- machine_kexec_prepare(image)
This function is called to make any arrangements to the image before it
is loaded.
This hook _MUST_ be provided by a platform in order to activate kexec
support for that platform. Otherwise, the platform is considered to not
support kexec and the kexec_load system call will fail (that makes all
existing platforms by default non-kexec'able).
- machine_kexec_cleanup(image)
This function is called to make any cleanups on image after the loaded
image data it is freed. This hook is optional. A platform may or may
not provide this hook.
- machine_kexec(image)
This function is called to perform the _actual_ kexec. This hook
_MUST_ be provided by a platform in order to activate kexec support for
that platform.
If a platform provides machine_kexec_prepare but forgets to provide
machine_kexec, a kexec will fall back to a reboot.
A ready-to-use machine_kexec_simple() generic function is provided to,
hopefully, simplify kexec adoption for embedded platforms. A platform
may call this function from its specific machine_kexec hook, like this:

The e200 core is a Book-E core (similar to e500) that has a unified L1 cache
and is not cache coherent on the bus. The e200 core also adds a separate
exception level for debug exceptions. Part of this patch helps to cleanup a
few cases that are true for all Freescale Book-E parts, not just e500.

For all architectures, this just means that you'll see a "Memory Model"
choice in your architecture menu. For those that implement DISCONTIGMEM,
you may eventually want to make your ARCH_DISCONTIGMEM_ENABLE a "def_bool
y" and make your users select DISCONTIGMEM right out of the new choice
menu. The only disadvantage might be if you have some specific things that
you need in your help option to explain something about DISCONTIGMEM.

This patch kills the whole embedded System.map mecanism and the
bootloader-passed System.map that was used to provide symbol resolution in
xmon. Instead, xmon now uses kallsyms like ppc64 does.
No hurry getting that in Linus tree, let it be tested in -mm for a while
first and make sure it doesn't break various embedded configs.

4xx and Book-E PPC's have several exception levels. The code to handle
each level is fairly regular. Turning the code into macro's will ease the
handling of future exception levels (debug) in forth coming chips.

Made the number of TLB CAM entries private and converted the board
consumers to use num_tlbcam_entries which is setup at boot time from
configuration registers. This way the only consumers of the #define
NUM_TLBCAMS are the arrays used to manage the TLB.

The MPC8548 has 48 internal interrupts and 12 external interrupts. The
previous generation PowerQUICC III devices only had 32 internal and 12
external interrupts on the primary interrupt controller.
Expanded the number of internal interrupts to 48 for all PowerQUICC III
processors and moved the interrupt numbers for the external after the 48
internal interrupt lines, rather than putting the 12 new internal
interrupts at the end and ifdef'ng the whole mess. As parted of this
created a macro which represents the internal interrupt senses since they
are the same on all PQ3 processors.

This patch implements a number of smp_processor_id() cleanup ideas that
Arjan van de Ven and I came up with.
The previous __smp_processor_id/_smp_processor_id/smp_processor_id API
spaghetti was hard to follow both on the implementational and on the
usage side.
Some of the complexity arose from picking wrong names, some of the
complexity comes from the fact that not all architectures defined
__smp_processor_id.
In the new code, there are two externally visible symbols:
- smp_processor_id(): debug variant.
- raw_smp_processor_id(): nondebug variant. Replaces all existing
uses of _smp_processor_id() and __smp_processor_id(). Defined
by every SMP architecture in include/asm-*/smp.h.
There is one new internal symbol, dependent on DEBUG_PREEMPT:
- debug_smp_processor_id(): internal debug variant, mapped to
smp_processor_id().
Also, i moved debug_smp_processor_id() from lib/kernel_lock.c into a new
lib/smp_processor_id.c file. All related comments got updated and/or
clarified.
I have build/boot tested the following 8 .config combinations on x86:
{SMP,UP} x {PREEMPT,!PREEMPT} x {DEBUG_PREEMPT,!DEBUG_PREEMPT}
I have also build/boot tested x64 on UP/PREEMPT/DEBUG_PREEMPT. (Other
architectures are untested, but should work just fine.)

Despite all the care lately in making the powermac sleep/wakeup as
robust as possible, there is still a nasty related to the use of cpufreq
on PMU based machines. Unfortunately, it affects paulus old powerbook
so I have to fix it :)
We didn't manage to understand what is precisely going on, it leads to
memory corruption and might have to do with RAM not beeing properly
refreshed when a cpufreq transition is done right before the sleep.
The best workaround (and less intrusive at this point) we could come up
with is included in this patch. We basically do _not_ force a switch to
high speed on suspend anymore (that is what is causing the problem) on
those machines. We still force a speed switch on wakeup (since we don't
know what speed we are coming back from sleep at, and that seems to work
fine).
Since, during this short interval, the actual CPU speed might be
incorrect, we also hack around by multiplying loops_per_jiffy by 2 (max
speed factor on those machines) during early wakeup stage to make sure
udelay's during that time aren't too short.
For after 2.6.12, we'll change udelay implementation to use the CPU
timebase (which is always constant) instead like we do on ppc64 and thus
get rid of all those problems.

Runtime feature support for unified caches was testing a userland feature
flag (PPC_FEATURE_UNIFIED_CACHE) instead of a cpu feature flag
(CPU_FTR_SPLIT_ID_CACHE). Luckily the current defined bit mask for cpu
features and userland features do not overlap so this only causes an issue
on machines with a unified cache, which is extremely rare on PPC today.

The call to io_block_mapping was creating an invalid BAT entry because the
value of BCSR_SIZE (32K) is too small to be used in a BAT (128K min). This
change removes the io_block_mapping call since these registers can easily
be mapped using ioremap at the point of use.

The error checking for emulation of load string instructions was overly
generous and would cause certain valid forms of the instructions to be
treated as illegal. We drop the range checking since the architecture
allows this to be boundedly undefined. Tests on CPUs that support these
instructions appear not do cause illegal instruction traps on range errors
and just allow the execution to occur.
Thanks to Kim Phillips for debugging this and figuring out what real HW was
doing.

This patch adds on-chip PCI bridge support for the PQ2 family. The
incomplete existent code is updated with interrupt handling stuff and
board-specific bits for 8272ADS and PQ2FADS; the related files were renamed
(from m8260_pci to m82xx_pci) to be of more generic fashion. This is
tested with 8266ADS and 8272ADS, should work on PQ2FADS as well.

image file existed to report 'is ready' or 'not made'. However make
appeared to compute the file list before the rule was executed.

Recent kernels occasionally trigger a PMU timeout on some mac laptops,
typically on wakeup from sleep. This seem to be caused by either a too big
latency caused by the cpufreq switch on wakeup from sleep or by an
interrupt beeing lost due to the reset of the interrupt controller done
during wakeup.
This patch makes that code more robust by stopping PMU auto poll activity
around cpufreq changes on machines that use the PMU for such changes (long
latency switching involving a CPU hard reset and flush of all caches) and
by removing the reset of the open pic interrupt controller on wakeup (that
can cause the loss of an interrupt and Darwin doesn't do it, so it must not
be necessary).

This patch fixed CONFIG_TASK_SIZE handling on 44x. Currently head_44x.S
hardcodes 0x80000000, which breaks if user chooses to change TASK_SIZE
(e.g. for 3G user-space). Tested on Ocotea in 3G/1G configuration.

Initialization of 8250 serial ports that are platform devices require that
at empty entry exists in the array of plat_serial8250_port. With out an
empty entry we can get some pretty random behavior.

Recently the __copy_tofrom_user routine was modified to avoid doing
prefetches past the end of the source array. However, in doing so we
introduced a bug in that it now returns the wrong value for the number
of bytes not copied when a fault is encountered. This fixes it to
return the correct number.

On ppc32, the platform code can supply a "progress" function that is
used to show progress through the boot. These functions are usually
in an init section and so can't be called after the init pages are
freed. Now that the cpu bringup code can be called after the system
is booted (for hotplug cpu) we can get the situation where the
progress function can be called after boot. The simple fix is to set
the progress function pointer to NULL when the init pages are freed,
and that is what this patch does (note that all callers already check
whether the function pointer is NULL before trying to call it).

In separating out support for hardware floating point we missed the fact
that both POWER3 and POWER4 have HW FP. Enable CONFIG_PPC_FPU for POWER3
and POWER4 fixes the issue.

While looking at code generated by gcc4.0 I noticed some functions still
had frame pointers, even after we stopped ppc64 from defining
CONFIG_FRAME_POINTER. It turns out kernel/Makefile hardwires
-fno-omit-frame-pointer on when compiling schedule.c.
Create CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER and define it on architectures
that dont require frame pointers in sched.c code.

We can identify new Freescale PPC cores by the fact that the MSB of the PVR
is set. If we are a new Freescale core the decode of major/minor revision
numbers is simplified so we dont have to add new case checks for a every
new Freescale core.

The PPC32 kernel puts platform-specific functions into separate sections so
that unneeded parts of it can be freed when we've booted and actually
worked out what we're running on today.
This makes kallsyms ignore those functions, because they're not between
_[se]text or _[se]inittext. Rather than teaching kallsyms about the
various pmac/chrp/etc sections, this patch adds '_[se]extratext' markers
for kallsyms.

A bunch of drivers use ISA DMA helpers or their equivalents for
platforms that have ISA with different DMA controller (a lot of ARM
boxen). Currently there is no way to put such dependency in Kconfig -
CONFIG_ISA is not it (e.g. it is not set on platforms that have no ISA
slots, but have on-board devices that pretend to be ISA ones).
New symbol added - ISA_DMA_API. Set when we have functional
enable_dma()/set_dma_mode()/etc. set of helpers. Next patches in the
series will add missing dependencies for drivers that need them.
I'm very carefully staying the hell out of the recurring flamefest on
what exactly CONFIG_ISA would mean in ideal world - added symbol has a
well-defined meaning and for now I really want to treat it as completely
independent from the mess around CONFIG_ISA.

The clock spreading disable/enable code was called to late/early during
the suspend/resume code on some laptops and would trigger a
might_sleep() warning due to the down() call in the low level i2c code.
This fixes it by calling those functions earlier/later when interrupts
are still enabled.

A typo in the machine table incorrectly mark the 101 PowerBook as
needing explicit callback from the video driver to enable sleep mode. I
did not implement that mecanism for chipsest older than r128, so we need
to mark this machine as always beeing able to sleep for now.

We are experiencing a problem when flushing the CPU caches before sleep
on some laptop models using the 750FX CPU rev 1.X. While I haven't been
able to figure out a proper explanation for what's going on, I do have a
workaround that seem to work reliably and allows those machine to sleep
and wakeup properly again.
I'll re-update that code if/when I ever find exactly what is happening
with those CPU revisions.

There is a problem with large amounts of spurious IRQs on PowerPC 82xx
systems.
The problem is corrected by adding sync at the end of cpm2_mask_and_ack.
This may be needed on 8xx as well but has not yet been confirmed.

Some earlier models of aluminium powerbooks and ibook G4s have a clock chip
that requires some tweaking before and after sleep. It seems that without
that magic incantation to disable and re-enable clock spreading, RAM isn't
properly refreshed during sleep. This fixes it.

This patch fixes the SDRAM output from /proc/cpuinfo. The previous code
assumed that there was only one bank of SDRAM, and that the size in the memory
configuration register was the total size.
