Revert the previous changes - the problem Paul Blankenbaker was fixing

was really a problem with bytes_repr_len() and zero-length FT_BYTES
fields, and it's not clear what to do about fields that have zero
length.  (Put in a comment about that.)

Clean up indentation a bit.
