Remy Bohmer 1ecc26bd27 atmel_serial: split the interrupt handler
Split up the interrupt handler of the serial port into a interrupt top-half
and a tasklet.

The goal is to get the interrupt top-half as short as possible to minimize
latencies on interrupts. But the old code also does some calls in the
interrupt handler that are not allowed on preempt-RT in IRQF_NODELAY context.
This handler is executed in this context because of the interrupt sharing with
the timer interrupt. The timer interrupt on Preempt-RT runs in IRQF_NODELAY
context.

The tasklet takes care of handling control status changes, pushing incoming
characters to the tty layer, handling break and other errors. It also handles
pushing TX data into the data register.

Reading the complete receive queue is still done in the top-half because we
never want to miss any incoming character.

Haavard Skinnemoen dfa7f343e5 atmel_serial: fix bugs in probe() error path and remove()
When an error happens in probe(), the clocks should be disabled, but
only if the port isn't already used as a console.

In remove(), the port struct shouldn't be freed because it's defined
statically.

Haavard Skinnemoen 829dd81122 atmel_serial: use cpu_relax() when busy-waiting
Replace two instances of barrier() with cpu_relax() since that's the right

Maciej W. Rozycki e6ee512f5a dz.c: Resource management
This is a set of changes to implement proper resource management in the
driver, including iomem space reservation and operating on physical
addresses ioremap()ped appropriately using accessory functions rather than
unportable direct assignments.

Some adjustments to code are made to reflect the architecture of the
interface, which is a centrally controlled multiport (or, as referred to
from DEC documentation, a serial line multiplexer, going up to 8 lines
originally) rather than a bundle of separate ports.

Types are changed, where applicable, to specify the width of hardware
registers explicitly. The interrupt handler is now managed in the
->startup() and ->shutdown() calls for consistency with other drivers and
also in preparation to handle the handover from the initial firmware-based
console gracefully.

Maciej W. Rozycki ff11d07803 dz: clean up and improve the setup of termios settings
A set of changes to the way termios settings are propagated to the serial
port hardware. The DZ11 only supports a selection of fixed baud settings,
so some requests may not be fulfilled. Keep the old setting in such a case
and failing that resort to 9600bps. Also add a missing update of the
transmit timeout. And remove the explicit encoding of the line selected
from writes to the Line Parameters Register as it has been preencoded by
the ->set_termios() call already. Finally, remove a duplicate macro for
the Receiver Enable bit.

Maciej W. Rozycki dbab81281d dz: always check if it is safe to console_putchar()
Polled transmission is tricky enough with the DZ11 design. While "loop" is
set to a high value, conceptually you are not allowed to transmit without
checking whether the device offers the right transmission line (yes, it is the
device that selects the line -- the driver has no control over it other than
disabling the transmitter offered if it is the wrong one), so the loop has to
be run at least once.

Well, the '1977 or PDP11 view of how serial lines should be handled... Except
that the serial interface used to be quite an impressive board back then
rather than chip.

Mark A. Greer 7bbdc3d51c serial: MPSC: set baudrate when BRG divider is set.
The clock to generate the desired baudrate with the MPSC is first divided
by the Baud Rate Generator (BRG) and then by the MPSC itself. So, when the
BRG divider is changed, the MPSC divider must also be changed to generate
the correct baudrate. During MPSC initialization, the BRG divider is
changed but the MPSC divider isn't changed until much later. This results
in some printk's coming out garbled. To fix that, set the MPSC divider at
the same time that the BRG divider is changed.

Russell King c8c6bfa39d serial: avoid stalling suspend if serial port won't drain
Some ports seem to be unable to drain their transmitters on shut down. Such a
problem can occur if the port is programmed for hardware imposed flow control,
characters are in the FIFO but the CTS signal is inactive.

Normally, this isn't a problem because most places where we wait for the
transmitter to drain have a time-out. However, there is no timeout in the
suspend path.

Give a port 30ms to drain; this is an arbitary value chosen to avoid long
delays if there are many such ports in the system, while giving a reasonable
chance for a single port to drain. Should a port not drain within this
timeout, issue a warning.

When we boot, serial ports remain in low power mode until they're used either
by userspace or for the kernel console.

However, if you suspend the system, and then resume, all serial ports will be
taken out of low power mode. This is bad news for embedded devices where this
can mean higher power consumption.

Only bring a serial port out of low power mode if the port is being used as
the kernel console, or is in use by userspace.

Will Newton 74a1974172 8250.c: support specifying DW APB UARTs in device platform_data
Allow the private_data field to be specified in platform_data for the
standard 8250/16550 UART. This field is used by DW APB type UARTs and
without this patch it's only possible to set this field when registering
the port by hand. If private_data is not set then the driver will
potentially oops with a NULL pointer dereference.

Yinghai Lu c3e4642be7 serial: keep the DTR setting for serial console.
with reverting "x86, serial: convert legacy COM ports to platform devices",
we will have the serial console before the port is probled again.

uart_add_one_port==>uart_configure_port==>set_mcttrl(port, 0) will clear
the DTR setting by uart_set_options(). then I will lose my output from
serial console again.

So try to keep DTR in uart_configure_port()

Guennadi Liakhovetski fa3218d859 [ARM] 4660/3: at91: allow selecting UART for early kernel messages
Currently early kernel messages, i.e., those from uncompression, go to the
debugging UART. And if it is enabled in the platform configuration, but
not initialized by the bootloader, the machine hangs, waiting for UART
status change. Besides, having those messages on another UART - typically
the console UART - may be preferrable. This patch allows selecting the
UART in kernel configuration.

David S. Miller fb445ee5f9 [SERIAL]: Fix section mismatches in Sun serial console drivers.
We're exporting an __init function, oops :-)

The core issue here is that add_preferred_console() is marked
as __init, this makes it impossible to invoke this thing from
a driver probe routine which is what the Sparc serial drivers
need to do.

There is no harm in dropping the __init marker. This code will
actually work properly when invoked from a modular driver,
except that init will probably not pick up the console change
without some other support code.

Then we can drop the __init from sunserial_console_match()
and we're no longer exporting an __init function to modules.

Martin Habets 58d784a5c7 [SERIAL] sparc: Infrastructure to fix section mismatch bugs.
This patch against 2.6.23 sparc-2.6.git contains a number of minor
cleanups of the sparc serial drivers. Initially I fixed this build
warning:

WARNING: vmlinux.o(.text+0x107a2c): Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:add_preferred_console (between 'sunserial_console_match' and 'sunserial_console_termios')

which is done by declaring sunserial_console_match() as __init. This
resulted in build warnings on sunserial_current_minor. To resolve
these the variable was changed so it is no longer global, and to hide
operations on it inside 2 new functions. These functions handle the
UART minor handling code that is common to all sparc serial drivers.

These changes allowed to clean up the uart counters in all the sparc
serial drivers, and the administration of minor device numbers.

Lastly, sunserial_console_termios() does not need to be exported since
it is only called from non-modular code.

Sadly, the following build warning still exists:

WARNING: vmlinux.o(__ksymtab+0x2910): Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:sunserial_console_match (between '__ksymtab_sunserial_console_match' and '__ksymtab_sunserial_unregister_minors')

This could be resolved by not exporting sunserial_console_match(), but
this is not possible at the moment because it is being called from
modular code. On the other hand, this is a bogus warning since it
comes from a ksymtab section.

Bjorn Helgaas e02f5f52ca serial: only use PNP IRQ if it's valid
"Luming Yu" <luming.yu@gmail.com> says:

There is a "ttyS1 irq is -1" problem observed on tiger4 which cause the
  serial port broken.

It is because that there is __no__ ACPI IRQ resource assigned for the
serial port. So the value of the IRQ for the port is never changed since it
  got initialized to -1.

If PNP supplies a valid IRQ, use it. Otherwise, leave port.irq == 0, which

Atsushi Nemoto 23f42b7b2e serial: fix serial_txx9 console initialization
Since commit 97d97224ff ("[SERIAL] Fix
console initialisation ordering"), serial_core calls ->pm() on
initialization even if the port was used for console.

This behaviour breaks serial_txx9 console since The serial_txx9 driver
initialize its port entirely on its ->pm() method if new state was 0.
This patch adds checking for oldstate value to fix this probelm.

Andres Salomon 8f4ce8c32f serial: turn serial console suspend a boot rather than compile time option
Currently, there's a CONFIG_DISABLE_CONSOLE_SUSPEND that allows one to stop
the serial console from being suspended when the rest of the machine goes
to sleep. This is incredibly useful for debugging power management-related
things; however, having it as a compile-time option has proved to be
incredibly inconvenient for us (OLPC). There are plenty of times that we
want serial console to not suspend, but for the most part we'd like serial
console to be suspended.

This drops CONFIG_DISABLE_CONSOLE_SUSPEND, and replaces it with a kernel
boot parameter (no_console_suspend). By default, the serial console will
be suspended along with the rest of the system; by passing
'no_console_suspend' to the kernel during boot, serial console will remain
alive during suspend.

For now, this is pretty serial console specific; further fixes could be
applied to make this work for things like netconsole.

Enable wakeup from serial ports, make it run-time configurable over sysfs,
e.g.,

echo enabled > /sys/devices/platform/serial8250.0/tty/ttyS0/power/wakeup

Requires

# CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED is not set

Following suggestions from Alan and Russell moved the may_wake_up checks
to serial_core.c. This time actually tested - it does even work. Could
someone, please, verify, that put_device after device_find_child is
correct?

Also would be nice to test with a Natsemi UART, that can wake up the system,
if such systems exist.

For this you just have to apply the patch below, issue the above "echo"
command to one of your Natsemi port, suspend and resume your system, and
verify that your Natsemi port still works. If you are actually capable of
waking up the system from that port, would be nice to test that as well.

Scott Wood 15f8c604a7 [POWERPC] cpm: Describe multi-user ram in its own device node.
The way the current CPM binding describes available multi-user (a.k.a.
dual-ported) RAM doesn't work well when there are multiple free regions,
and it doesn't work at all if the region doesn't begin at the start of
the muram area (as the hardware needs to be programmed with offsets into
this area). The latter situation can happen with SMC UARTs on CPM2, as its
parameter RAM is relocatable, u-boot puts it at zero, and the kernel doesn't
support moving it.

It is now described with a muram node, similar to QE. The current CPM
binding is sufficiently recent (i.e. never appeared in an official release)
that compatibility with existing device trees is not an issue.

The code supporting the new binding is shared between cpm1 and cpm2, rather
than remain separated. QE should be able to use this code as well, once
minor fixes are made to its device trees.

David Woodhouse e4533b243e [POWERPC] Optionally use new device number for pmac_zilog
This adds the option for the pmac_zilog driver to use the major/minor
numbers recently allocated specifically for it (/dev/ttyPZn) instead
of the /dev/ttySn numbers. The advantage of doing this is that it
allows the pmac_zilog and 8250 drivers to coexist. The disadvantage
of doing this is that it is a user-visible ABI change and it will
break existing working setups on powermacs, and could be confusing to
users.

Al Viro 9c5b34806c [SUNSAB]: Fix several bugs.
* don't register irq until ->startup() (and release in ->shutdown()).
That avoids oopsen with the current tree when interrupt comes before we'd
set up the data structures for ttyb.
	* handle console=ttyS... even when OBP talks to screen/keyboard
	* register irq handler for each port, let kernel/irq/handle.c
call it for both if needed. Kills code duplication in sunsab_interrupt().
BTW, there'd been bitrot in it - ttya handling had stopped calling
check_status() on BRK (correctly), ttyb copy of that code had kept the
bogus call in that case.

Corey Minyard ad4c2aa635 Serial 8250: handle saving the clear-on-read bits from the LSR and MSR
Reading the LSR clears the break, parity, frame error, and overrun bits in
the 8250 chip, but these are not being saved in all places that read the
LSR. Same goes for the MSR delta bits. Save the LSR bits off whenever the
lsr is read so they can be handled later in the receive routine. Save the
MSR bits to be handled in the modem status routine.

Also, clear the stored bits and clear the interrupt registers before
enabling interrupts, to avoid handling old values of the stored bits in the
interrupt routines.

David Woodhouse 20620d688a serial: don't optimise away baud rate changes when BOTHER is used
The uart_set_termios() function will bail out early without bothering to

whether c_ispeed and c_ospeed have changed. Those integers are always set

Andrew Morton 57d4810ea0 revert "x86, serial: convert legacy COM ports to platform devices"
Revert 7e92b4fc34. It broke Sébastien Dugué's
machine and Jeff said (persuasively)

This seems like it will break decades-long-working stuff, in favor of
breaking new ground in our favorite area, "trusting the BIOS."

It's just not worth it for serial ports, IMO. Serial ports are something
that just shouldn't break at this late stage in the game. My new Intel
platform boxes don't even have serial ports, so I question the value of
messing with serial port probing even more... because... just wait a year,
and your box won't have a serial port either! :)

I certainly don't object to the use of platform devices (or isa_driver),
but the probe change seems questionable. That's sorta analagous to
rewriting the floppy driver probe routine. Sure you could do it... but why
risk all that damage and go through debugging all over again?

It seems clear from this report that we cannot, should not, trust BIOS for
something (a) so simple and (b) that has been working for over a decade.

Much discussion ensued and we've decided to have another go at all of this.

This patch makes sure the sci serial port driver compiles for sh7708.
The approach taken is to treat the sh7708 as a subset of sh7706, sh7707,
sh7709. sh7708 is very similar to sh7706, sh7707, sh7709, but only
equipped with a single sci port. The platform data in setup-sh770x.c
already limits the number of serial ports for sh7708 to a single one,
so the non-existing scif ports pointed out in sh-sci.h will remain
unused in case of sh7708.

Josh Boyer 4f640efb31 Use resource_size_t for serial port IO addresses
At present, various parts of the serial code use unsigned long to define
resource addresses. This is a problem, because some 32-bit platforms have
physical addresses larger than 32-bits, and have mmio serial uarts located
above the 4GB point.

This patch changes the type of mapbase in both struct uart_port and struct
plat_serial8250_port to resource_size_t, which can be configured to be 64
bits on such platforms. The mapbase in serial_struct can't safely be
changed, because that structure is user visible.

Ben Dooks 531b617c71 [ARM] 4508/1: S3C: Move items to include/asm-arm/plat-s3c
This patch moves items of the s3c24xx support into
a new plat-s3c directory for items that use the
s3c24xx support but are not directly s3c24xx
compatible, such as the s3c2400 and s3c6400.
