Borislav Petkov 4a5838ad9d kbuild: Add extra gcc checks
Add a 'W=1' Makefile switch which adds additional checking per build
object.

The idea behind this option is targeted at developers who, in the
process of writing their code, want to do the occasional

make W=1 [target.o]

and let gcc do more extensive code checking for them. Then, they
could eyeball the output for valid gcc warnings about various
bugs/discrepancies which are not reported during the normal build
process.

For more background information and a use case, read through this
thread: http://marc.info/?l=kernel-janitors&m=129802065918147&w=2

Dirk Brandewie aab94339cd of: Add support for linking device tree blobs into vmlinux
This patch adds support for linking device tree blob(s) into
vmlinux. Modifies asm-generic/vmlinux.lds.h to add linking
.dtb sections into vmlinux. To maintain compatiblity with the of/fdt
driver code platforms MUST copy the blob to a non-init memory location
before the kernel frees the .init.* sections in the image.

Modifies scripts/Makefile.lib to add a kbuild command to
compile DTS files to device tree blobs and a rule to create objects to
wrap the blobs for linking.

STRUCT_ALIGNMENT is defined in vmlinux.lds.h for use in the rule to
create wrapper objects for the dtb in Makefile.lib. The
STRUCT_ALIGN() macro in vmlinux.lds.h is modified to use the
STRUCT_ALIGNMENT definition.

The DTB's are placed on 32 byte boundries to allow parsing the blob
with driver/of/fdt.c during early boot without having to copy the blob
to get the structure alignment GCC expects.

A DTB is linked in by adding the DTB object to the list of objects to
be linked into vmlinux in the archtecture specific Makefile using
   obj-y += foo.dtb.o

Yann E. MORIN 0719e1d23a Documentation/kbuild: add info that 'choice' can have a symbol name
Changeset 5a1aa8a1 added the possibility to name a choice,
and to have the same choice be defined multiple times.
But the documentation was forgotten, so this updates it accordingly.

Thanks to Arnaud Lacombe for pointing it to me in the first place:

Asbjoern Sloth Toennesen 55f88eccf9 kbuild, deb-pkg: support overriding userland architecture
Usefull if building for sparc64 userland, because the
sparc and sparc64 userlands use the same 64-bit kernel,
making it impossible to always select the correct userland
architecture for the resulting debian package.

Might also be usefull, if you want a i386 userland with a amd64 kernel.

Example usage:
	make KBUILD_DEBARCH=i386 deb-pkg

If specified, the directive must be placed at the top of the Kconfig file.

We need to change the grammar to make the mainmenu directive set the

set the prompt of the `current_entry', pointing originally to `rootmenu'.

Sam Ravnborg 80c00ba942 kbuild: allow assignment to {A,C}FLAGS_KERNEL on the command line
It is now possible to assign options to AS and CC
on the command line - which is only used for built-in code.

{A,C}FLAGS_KERNEL was used both in the top-level Makefile
in the arch makefiles, thus users had no way to specify
additional options to AS, CC without overriding
the original value.

Introduce a new set of variables KBUILD_{A,C}FLAGS_KERNEL

Sam Ravnborg 6588169d51 kbuild: allow assignment to {A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE on the command line
It is now possible to assign options to AS, CC and LD
on the command line - which is only used when building modules.

{A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE was all used both in the top-level Makefile
in the arch makefiles, thus users had no way to specify
additional options to AS, CC, LD when building modules
without overriding the original value.

Introduce a new set of variables KBUILD_{A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE
that is used by arch specific files and free up
{A,C,LD}FLAGS_MODULE so they can be assigned on
the command line.

All arch Makefiles that used the old variables has been updated.

Note: Previously we had a MODFLAGS variable for both
AS and CC. But in favour of consistency this was dropped.
So in some cases arch Makefile has one assignmnet replaced by
two assignmnets.

Note2: MODFLAGS was not documented and is dropped
without any notice. I do not expect much/any breakage
from this.

Michal Marek ef8ff89b58 kbuild: Really don't clean bounds.h and asm-offsets.h
Commit 7d3cc8b tried to keep bounds.h and asm-offsets.h during make
clean by filtering these out of $(clean-files), but they are listed in
$(targets) and $(always) and thus removed automatically. Introduce a new
$(no-clean-files) variable to really skip such files in Makefile.clean.

Michal Marek bc081dd6e9 kbuild: generate modules.builtin
To make it easier for module-init-tools and scripts like mkinitrd to
distinguish builtin and missing modules, install a modules.builtin file
listing all builtin modules. This is done by generating an additional
config file (tristate.conf) with tristate options set to uppercase 'Y'
or 'M'. If we source that config file, the builtin modules appear in
obj-Y.

Sam Ravnborg caa27b66bd kbuild: use INSTALLKERNEL to select customized installkernel script
Replace the use of CROSS_COMPILE to select a customized
installkernel script with the possibility to set INSTALLKERNEL
to select a custom installkernel script when running make:

    make INSTALLKERNEL=arm-installkernel install

With this patch we are now more consistent across
different architectures - they did not all support use
of CROSS_COMPILE.

The use of CROSS_COMPILE was a hack as this really belongs
to gcc/binutils and the installkernel script does not change
just because we change toolchain.

The use of CROSS_COMPILE caused troubles with an upcoming patch
that saves CROSS_COMPILE when a kernel is built - it would no
longer be installable.
[Thanks to Peter Z. for this hint]

This patch undos what Ian did in commit:

  0f8e2d62fa
  ("use ${CROSS_COMPILE}installkernel in arch/*/boot/install.sh")

The patch has been lightly tested on x86 only - but all changes
looks obvious.

Markus Heidelberg 98f540d31b kconfig: resort the documentation of the environment variables
All the KCONFIG_ environment variables were previously located in a
section "Environment variables in 'menuconfig'", but neither are they
restricted to 'menuconfig' nor are they all used by 'menuconfig'.

Introduce the following three sections for these variables:
  * Environment variables for '*config'
  * Environment variables for '{allyes/allmod/allno/rand}config'
  * Environment variables for 'silentoldconfig'

Furthermore this puts MENUCONFIG_MODE next to MENUCONFIG_COLOR into a
common section "User interface options for 'menuconfig'".

Sam Ravnborg 720097d895 kbuild: introduce subdir-ccflags-y
Following patch introduce support for setting options
to gcc that has effect for current directory and all
subdirectories.

The typical use case are an architecture or a subsystem that
decide to cover all files with -Werror.
Today alpha, mips and sparc uses -Werror in almost all their
Makefile- with subdir-ccflag-y it is now simpler to do so
as only the top-level directories needs to be covered.

Likewise if we decide to cover a full subsystem such
as net/ with -Werror this is done by adding a single
line to net/Makefile.
