Unaligned access is ok for the following arches:
cris, m68k, mn10300, powerpc, s390, x86
Arches that use the memmove implementation for native endian, and
the byteshifting for the opposite endianness.
h8300, m32r, xtensa
Packed struct for native endian, byteshifting for other endian:
alpha, blackfin, ia64, parisc, sparc, sparc64, mips, sh
m86knommu is generic_be for Coldfire, otherwise unaligned access is ok.
frv, arm chooses endianness based on compiler settings, uses the byteshifting
versions. Remove the unaligned trap handler from frv as it is now unused.
v850 is le, uses the byteshifting versions for both be and le.
Remove the now unused asm-generic implementation.

Semaphores are no longer performance-critical, so a generic C
implementation is better for maintainability, debuggability and
extensibility. Thanks to Peter Zijlstra for fixing the lockdep

Correctly determine the address of an illegal instruction. The EPCR0 register
holds this value (masked by EPCR0_PC) if the validity bit is set (masked by
EPCR0_V). So the test as to whether the contents of the register are usable
should be involve checking the _V bit, not the _PC bits.

Make NOMMU-mode work with base addresses other than 0xC0000000 by:
(1) Giving the code that sets up the protection registers the right address
in __sdram_base. Rather than being hard coded to 0xC0000000, the value
of __page_offset is obtained from the linker script.
(2) Eliminate the check in __switch_to() that verifies the current thread
info is in the 0xCxxxxxxx region.

Commit d3d74453c3 ("hrtimer: fixup the
HRTIMER_CB_IRQSAFE_NO_SOFTIRQ fallback") broke several archs, and since
only Russell bothered to merge the fix, and Greg to ACK his arch, I'm
sending this for merger.
I have confirmation that the Alpha bit results in a booting kernel.
That leaves: blackfin, frv, sh and sparc untested.
The deadlock in question was found by Russell:
IRQ handle
-> timer_tick() - xtime seqlock held for write
-> update_process_times()
-> run_local_timers()
-> hrtimer_run_queues()
-> hrtimer_get_softirq_time() - tries to get a read lock
Now, Thomas assures me the fix is trivial, only do_timer() needs to be
done under the xtime_lock, and update_process_times() can savely be
removed from under it.

This patchset adds a flags variable to reserve_bootmem() and uses the
BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE flag in crashkernel reservation code to detect collisions
between crashkernel area and already used memory.
This patch:
Change the reserve_bootmem() function to accept a new flag BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE.
If that flag is set, the function returns with -EBUSY if the memory already
has been reserved in the past. This is to avoid conflicts.
Because that code runs before SMP initialisation, there's no race condition
inside reserve_bootmem_core().

calibrate_delay() must be __cpuinit, not __{dev,}init.
I've verified that this is correct for all users.
While doing the latter, I also did the following cleanups:
- remove pointless additional prototypes in C files
- ensure all users #include <linux/delay.h>

Permit the memory to be located somewhere other than address 0xC0000000 in
NOMMU mode. The configuration options are already present, it just
requires wiring up in the linker script.
Note that only a limited set of locations of runtime addresses are available
because of the way the CPU protection registers work.

Arrange the sections in the FRV arch so that a BRA instruction with a
16-bit displacement can always reach from the trap table to entry.S,
tlb-miss.S and break.S.
The problem otherwise is that the linker can insert sufficient code between
the slots in the trap table and the targets of the branch instructions in
those slots that the displacement field in the instruction isn't
sufficiently large. This is because the branch targets were in the .text
section along with most of the other code in the kernel.

per cpu data section contains two types of data. One set which is
exclusively accessed by the local cpu and the other set which is per cpu,
but also shared by remote cpus. In the current kernel, these two sets are
not clearely separated out. This can potentially cause the same data
cacheline shared between the two sets of data, which will result in
unnecessary bouncing of the cacheline between cpus.
One way to fix the problem is to cacheline align the remotely accessed per
cpu data, both at the beginning and at the end. Because of the padding at
both ends, this will likely cause some memory wastage and also the
interface to achieve this is not clean.
This patch:
Moves the remotely accessed per cpu data (which is currently marked
as ____cacheline_aligned_in_smp) into a different section, where all the data
elements are cacheline aligned. And as such, this differentiates the local
only data and remotely accessed data cleanly.

Be (self-)consistent and use CONFIG_GDB_CONSOLE everywhere rather than using
CONFIG_GDBSTUB_CONSOLE in some places and not others. This is also then
consistent with other archs.

Miscellaneous fixes to bring FRV up to date:
(1) Copy the new syscall numbers from i386 to asm-frv/unistd.h and fill out
the syscall table in entry.S too.
(2) Mark __frv_uart0 and __frv_uart1 __pminitdata rather than __initdata so
that determine_clocks() can access them when CONFIG_PM=y.
(3) Make arch/frv/mm/elf-fdpic.c include asm/mman.h so that MAP_FIXED is
available (fixes commit 2fd3bebaad).

Remove the Kconfig selection of semaphore debugging from the ALPHA and FRV
Kconfig files, and centralize it in lib/Kconfig.debug.
There doesn't seem to be much point in letting individual architectures
independently define the same Kconfig option when it can just as easily be
put in a single Kconfig file and made dependent on a subset of
architectures. that way, at least the option shows up in the same relative
location in the menu each time.

Let's allow page-alignment in general for per-cpu data (wanted by Xen, and
Ingo suggested KVM as well).
Because larger alignments can use more room, we increase the max per-cpu
memory to 64k rather than 32k: it's getting a little tight.

The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered
sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is
pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented.
I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of
register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register
duplicate sysctl entries.
So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in
the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future
enhancments harder.

when CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRAMFS is not selected. This saves another 4 kbytes

Introduce pagefault_{disable,enable}() and use these where previously we did
manual preempt increments/decrements to make the pagefault handler do the
atomic thing.
Currently they still rely on the increased preempt count, but do not rely on
the disabled preemption, this might go away in the future.
(NOTE: the extra barrier() in pagefault_disable might fix some holes on
machines which have too many registers for their own good)

Add a vmlinux.lds.h helper macro for defining the eight-level initcall table,
teach all the architectures to use it.

Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.
The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).
Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.
Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.
I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.
This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:
struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);
And put the old one back at the end:
set_irq_regs(old_regs);
Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().
In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:
- update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
- profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
+ update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
+ profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);
I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().
Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:
(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
the input_dev struct.
(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
pointer or not.
(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
irq_handler_t.

This adds the new kernel_execve function on all architectures that were using
_syscall3() to implement execve.
The implementation uses code from the _syscall3 macros provided in the
unistd.h header file. I don't have cross-compilers for any of these
architectures, so the patch is untested with the exception of i386.
Most architectures can probably implement this in a nicer way in assembly or
by combining it with the sys_execve implementation itself, but this should do
it for now.

This patch adds a nsproxy structure to the task struct. Later patches will
move the fs namespace pointer into this structure, and introduce a new utsname
namespace into the nsproxy.
The vserver and openvz functionality, then, would be implemented in large part
by virtualizing/isolating more and more resources into namespaces, each
contained in the nsproxy.

asm/serial.h is supposed to contain the definitions for the architecture
specific 8250 ports for the 8250 driver. It may also define BASE_BAUD,
but this is the base baud for the architecture specific ports _only_.
Therefore, nothing other than the 8250 driver should be including this
header file. In order to move towards this goal, here is a patch which
removes some of the more obvious incorrect includes of the file.

Pass ticks to do_timer() and update_times(), and adjust x86_64 and s390
timer interrupt handler with this change.
Currently update_times() calculates ticks by "jiffies - wall_jiffies", but
callers of do_timer() should know how many ticks to update. Passing ticks
get rid of this redundant calculation. Also there are another redundancy
pointed out by Martin Schwidefsky.
This cleanup make a barrier added by
5aee405c66 needless. So this patch removes
it.
As a bonus, this cleanup make wall_jiffies can be removed easily, since now
wall_jiffies is always synced with jiffies. (This patch does not really
remove wall_jiffies. It would be another cleanup patch)

Improve FRV's use of generic IRQ handling:
(*) Use generic_handle_irq() rather than __do_IRQ() as the latter is obsolete.
(*) Don't implement enable() and disable() ops as these will fall back to
using unmask() and mask().
(*) Provide mask_ack() functions to avoid a call each to mask() and ack().
(*) Make the cascade handlers always return IRQ_HANDLED.
(*) Implement the mask() and unmask() functions in the same order as they're
listed in the ops table.

Fix some FRV arch compile errors, including:
(*) Marking nr_kernel_pages as __meminitdata so that references to it end up
being properly calculated rather than being assumed to be in the small
data section (and thus calculated wrt the GP register). Not doing this
causes the linker to emit errors as the offset is too big to fit into the
load instruction.
(*) Move pm_power_off into an unconditionally compiled .c file as it's now
unconditionally accessed.
(*) Declare frv_change_cmode() in a header file rather than in a .c file, and
declare it asmlinkage.

include/linux/version.h contained both actual KERNEL version
and UTS_RELEASE that contains a subset from git SHA1 for when
kernel was compiled as part of a git repository.
This had the unfortunate side-effect that all files including version.h
would be recompiled when some git changes was made due to changes SHA1.
Split it out so we keep independent parts in separate files.
Also update checkversion.pl script to no longer check for UTS_RELEASE.

- When setting a sighandler using sigaction() call, if the flag
SA_ONSTACK is set and no alternate stack is provided via sigaltstack(),
the kernel still try to install the alternate stack. This behavior is
the opposite of the one which is documented in Single Unix Specifications
V3.
- Also when setting an alternate stack using sigaltstack() with the flag
SS_DISABLE, the kernel try to install the alternate stack on signal
delivery.
These two use cases makes the process crash at signal delivery.

While cleaning up parisc_ksyms.c earlier, I noticed that strpbrk wasn't
being exported from lib/string.c. Investigating further, I noticed a
changeset that removed its export and added it to _ksyms.c on a few more
architectures. The justification was that "other arches do it."
I think this is wrong, since no architecture currently defines
__HAVE_ARCH_STRPBRK, there's no reason for any of them to be exporting it
themselves. Therefore, consolidate the export to lib/string.c.

For some architectures, a few syscalls are not linked in noMMU mode. In
that case, the MMU depending syscalls are needed to be defined as
'cond_syscall'. For example, ARM architecture selectively links sys_mlock
by the mode configuration.
In case of FRV, it has been managed by #ifdef CONFIG_MMU macro in
arch/frv/kernel/entry.S. However these conditional macros are just
duplicates if they were defined as cond_syscall. Compilation test is done
with FRV toolchains for both of MMU and noMMU mode.

When we stop allocating percpu memory for not-possible CPUs we must not touch
the percpu data for not-possible CPUs at all. The correct way of doing this
is to test cpu_possible() or to use for_each_cpu().
This patch is a kernel-wide sweep of all instances of NR_CPUS. I found very
few instances of this bug, if any. But the patch converts lots of open-coded
test to use the preferred helper macros.

Make the FRV arch use virtual interrupt disablement because accesses to the
processor status register (PSR) are relatively slow and because we will
soon have the need to deal with multiple interrupt controls at the same
time (separate h/w and inter-core interrupts).
The way this is done is to dedicate one of the four integer condition code
registers (ICC2) to maintaining a virtual interrupt disablement state
whilst inside the kernel. This uses the ICC2.Z flag (Zero) to indicate
whether the interrupts are virtually disabled and the ICC2.C flag (Carry)
to indicate whether the interrupts are physically disabled.
ICC2.Z is set to indicate interrupts are virtually disabled. ICC2.C is set
to indicate interrupts are physically enabled. Under normal running
conditions Z==0 and C==1.
Disabling interrupts with local_irq_disable() doesn't then actually
physically disable interrupts - it merely sets ICC2.Z to 1. Should an
interrupt then happen, the exception prologue will note ICC2.Z is set and
branch out of line using one instruction (an unlikely BEQ). Here it will
physically disable interrupts and clear ICC2.C.
When it comes time to enable interrupts (local_irq_enable()), this simply
clears the ICC2.Z flag and invokes a trap #2 if both Z and C flags are
clear (the HI integer condition). This can be done with the TIHI
conditional trap instruction.
The trap then physically reenables interrupts and sets ICC2.C again. Upon
returning the interrupt will be taken as interrupts will then be enabled.
Note that whilst processing the trap, the whole exceptions system is
disabled, and so an interrupt can't happen till it returns.
If no pending interrupt had happened, ICC2.C would still be set, the HI
condition would not be fulfilled, and no trap will happen.
Saving interrupts (local_irq_save) is simply a matter of pulling the ICC2.Z
flag out of the CCR register, shifting it down and masking it off. This
gives a result of 0 if interrupts were enabled and 1 if they weren't.
Restoring interrupts (local_irq_restore) is then a matter of taking the
saved value mentioned previously and XOR'ing it against 1. If it was one,
the result will be zero, and if it was zero the result will be non-zero.
This result is then used to affect the ICC2.Z flag directly (it is a
condition code flag after all). An XOR instruction does not affect the
Carry flag, and so that bit of state is unchanged. The two flags can then
be sampled to see if they're both zero using the trap (TIHI) as for the
unconditional reenablement (local_irq_enable).
This patch also:
(1) Modifies the debugging stub (break.S) to handle single-stepping crossing
into the trap #2 handler and into virtually disabled interrupts.
(2) Removes superseded fixup pointers from the second instructions in the trap
tables (there's no a separate fixup table for this).
(3) Declares the trap #3 vector for use in .org directives in the trap table.
(4) Moves irq_enter() and irq_exit() in do_IRQ() to avoid problems with
virtual interrupt handling, and removes the duplicate code that has now
been folded into irq_exit() (softirq and preemption handling).
(5) Tells the compiler in the arch Makefile that ICC2 is now reserved.
(6) Documents the in-kernel ABI, including the virtual interrupts.
(7) Renames the old irq management functions to different names.

Make various alterations and fixes to the FRV arch:
(1) Resyncs the FRV system call collection with the i386 arch.
(2) Discards __iounmap() as it's not used.
(3) Fixes the use of the SWAP/SWAPI instruction to get the arguments the right
way around in atomic.h, and also to get the asm constraints correct.
(4) Moves copy_to/from_user_page() to asm/cacheflush.h to be consistent with
other archs.

Handle TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK as added by David Woodhouse's patch entitled:
[PATCH] 2/3 Add TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK support for arch/powerpc
[PATCH] 3/3 Generic sys_rt_sigsuspend
It does the following:
(1) Declares TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK for FRV.
(2) Invokes it over to do_signal() when TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK is set.
(3) Makes do_signal() support TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK, using the signal mask saved
in current->saved_sigmask.
(4) Discards sys_rt_sigsuspend() from the arch, using the generic one instead.
(5) Makes sys_sigsuspend() save the signal mask and set TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK
rather than attempting to fudge the return registers.
(6) Makes sys_sigsuspend() return -ERESTARTNOHAND rather than looping
intrinsically.
(7) Makes setup_frame(), setup_rt_frame() and handle_signal() return 0 or
-EFAULT rather than true/false to be consistent with the rest of the
kernel.
Due to the fact do_signal() is then only called from one place:
(8) Make do_signal() no longer have a return value is it was just being
ignored; force_sig() takes care of this.
(9) Discards the old sigmask argument to do_signal() as it's no longer
necessary.
This patch depends on the FRV signalling patches as well as the
sys_rt_sigsuspend patch.

- dump_thread() is only used in fs/binfmt_aout.c and can therefore be
removed on all architectures where CONFIG_BINFMT_AOUT is not
available

Fix a number of miscellanous items:
(1) Declare lock sections in the linker script.
(2) Recurse in the correct manner in the arch makefile.
(3) asm/bug.h requires asm/linkage.h to be included first. One C file puts
asm/bug.h first.
(4) Add an empty RTC header file to avoid missing header file errors.
(5) sg_dma_address() should use the dma_address member of a scatter list.
(6) Add trivial pci_unmap support.
(7) Add pgprot_noncached()
(8) Discard u_quad_t.
(9) Use ~0UL rather than ULONG_MAX in unistd.h in case the latter isn't
declared.
(10) Add an empty VGA header file to avoid missing header file errors.
(11) Add an XOR header file to use the generic XOR stuff.

Force the 8230 serial driver to be built in if the on-CPU UARTs are to be
used. It can't be used as a module because the arch setup needs to call into
it.
