The combination of NAT and helpers may produce TCP sequence adjustments.
In failover setups, this information needs to be replicated in order to
achieve a successful recovery of mangled, related connections. This patch is

Add rate estimator match. The rate estimator match can match on
estimated rates by the RATEEST target. It supports matching on
absolute bps/pps values, comparing two rate estimators and matching
on the difference between two rate estimators.
This is what I use to route outgoing data connections from a FTP
server over two lines based on the available bandwidth:
# estimate outgoing rates
iptables -t mangle -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j RATEEST --rateest-name eth0 \
--rateest-interval 250ms \
--rateest-ewma 0.5s
iptables -t mangle -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j RATEEST --rateest-name ppp0 \
--rateest-interval 250ms \
--rateest-ewma 0.5s
# mark based on available bandwidth
iptables -t mangle -A BALANCE -m state --state NEW \
-m helper --helper ftp \
-m rateest --rateest-delta \
--rateest1 eth0 \
--rateest-bps1 2.5mbit \
--rateest-gt \
--rateest2 ppp0 \
--rateest-bps2 2mbit \

Instead of using a big array of NR_CPUS entries, we can compute the size
needed at runtime, using nr_cpu_ids
This should save some ram (especially on David's machines where NR_CPUS=4096 :
32 KB can be saved per table, and 64KB for dynamically allocated ones (because
of slab/slub alignements) )
In particular, the 'bootstrap' tables are not any more static (in data
section) but on stack as their size is now very small.
This also should reduce the size used on stack in compat functions
(get_info() declares an automatic variable, that could be bigger than kernel
stack size for big NR_CPUS)

When the packet size is changed by the FTP NAT helper, the connection

by the size difference. This is wrong because NAT sequence number
adjustment happens after helpers are called, so the unadjusted number

returns a wrong pointer to the GRE key of a version 0 packet thus
corrupting the packet payload.
The intended behaviour for GREv0 packets is to act like
nf_conntrack_proto_generic/nf_nat_proto_unknown so I have ripped the
offending functions (not used anymore) and modified the

The error pointer argument in netlink message handlers is used
to signal the special case where processing has to be interrupted
because a dump was started but no error happened. Instead it is
simpler and more clear to return -EINTR and have netlink_run_queue()
deal with getting the queue right.
nfnetlink passed on this error pointer to its subsystem handlers
but only uses it to signal the start of a netlink dump. Therefore
it can be removed there as well.
This patch also cleans up the error handling in the affected
message handlers to be consistent since it had to be touched anyway.

Add new NFLOG target to allow use of nfnetlink_log for both IPv4 and IPv6.
Currently we have two (unsupported by userspace) hacks in the LOG and ULOG

namely the IPv4 and IPv6 LOG targets can not specify a number of arguments
related to nfnetlink_log, while the ULOG target is only available for IPv4.

Add a new xtables target, CONNSECMARK, which is used to specify rules
for copying security marks from packets to connections, and for
copyying security marks back from connections to packets. This is
similar to the CONNMARK target, but is more limited in scope in that
it only allows copying of security marks to and from packets, as this
is all it needs to do.
A typical scenario would be to apply a security mark to a 'new' packet
with SECMARK, then copy that to its conntrack via CONNMARK, and then
restore the security mark from the connection to established and
related packets on that connection.

When iptables userspace adds an ipt_standard_target, it calculates the size
of the entire entry as:
sizeof(struct ipt_entry) + XT_ALIGN(sizeof(struct ipt_standard_target))
ipt_standard_target looks like this:
struct xt_standard_target
{
struct xt_entry_target target;
int verdict;
};
xt_entry_target contains a pointer, so when compiled for 64 bit the
structure gets an extra 4 byte of padding at the end. On 32 bit
architectures where iptables aligns to 8 byte it will also have 4
byte padding at the end because it is only 36 bytes large.
The compat_ipt_standard_fn in the kernel adjusts the offsets by
sizeof(struct ipt_standard_target) - sizeof(struct compat_ipt_standard_target),
which will always result in 4, even if the structure from userspace
was already padded to a multiple of 8. On x86 this works out by
accident because userspace only aligns to 4, on all other
architectures this is broken and causes incorrect adjustments to
the size and following offsets.

with IPv6. This means that ip6tables requires '-p esp' like iptables.

determine from userspace whether logging information was lots somewhere
downstream.

counters, or using a global sequence counter, or both.

This monster-patch tries to do the best job for unifying the data
structures and backend interfaces for the three evil clones ip_tables,
ip6_tables and arp_tables. In an ideal world we would never have
allowed this kind of copy+paste programming... but well, our world
isn't (yet?) ideal.
o introduce a new x_tables module
o {ip,arp,ip6}_tables depend on this x_tables module
o registration functions for tables, matches and targets are only
wrappers around x_tables provided functions
o all matches/targets that are used from ip_tables and ip6_tables
are now implemented as xt_FOOBAR.c files and provide module aliases
to ipt_FOOBAR and ip6t_FOOBAR
o header files for xt_matches are in include/linux/netfilter/,
include/linux/netfilter_{ipv4,ipv6} contains compatibility wrappers
around the xt_FOOBAR.h headers
Based on this patchset we're going to further unify the code,
gradually getting rid of all the layer 3 specific assumptions.

This patch unconditionally requires CAP_NET_ADMIN for all nfnetlink
messages. It also removes the per-message cap_required field, since all
existing subsystems use CAP_NET_ADMIN for all their messages anyway.

The existing connection tracking subsystem in netfilter can only
handle ipv4. There were basically two choices present to add
connection tracking support for ipv6. We could either duplicate all
of the ipv4 connection tracking code into an ipv6 counterpart, or (the
choice taken by these patches) we could design a generic layer that
could handle both ipv4 and ipv6 and thus requiring only one sub-protocol
(TCP, UDP, etc.) connection tracking helper module to be written.
In fact nf_conntrack is capable of working with any layer 3
protocol.
The existing ipv4 specific conntrack code could also not deal
with the pecularities of doing connection tracking on ipv6,
which is also cured here. For example, these issues include:
1) ICMPv6 handling, which is used for neighbour discovery in
ipv6 thus some messages such as these should not participate
in connection tracking since effectively they are like ARP
messages
2) fragmentation must be handled differently in ipv6, because
the simplistic "defrag, connection track and NAT, refrag"
(which the existing ipv4 connection tracking does) approach simply
isn't feasible in ipv6
3) ipv6 extension header parsing must occur at the correct spots
before and after connection tracking decisions, and there were
no provisions for this in the existing connection tracking
design
4) ipv6 has no need for stateful NAT
The ipv4 specific conntrack layer is kept around, until all of
the ipv4 specific conntrack helpers are ported over to nf_conntrack
and it is feature complete. Once that occurs, the old conntrack
stuff will get placed into the feature-removal-schedule and we will
fully kill it off 6 months later.

Initially we used 64bit counters for conntrack-based accounting, since we
had no event mechanism to tell userspace that our counters are about to
overflow. With nfnetlink_conntrack, we now have such a event mechanism and
thus can save 16bytes per connection.

To keep consistency, the TCP private protocol information is nested
attributes under CTA_PROTOINFO_TCP. This way the sequence of attributes to
access the TCP state information looks like here below:
CTA_PROTOINFO
CTA_PROTOINFO_TCP
CTA_PROTOINFO_TCP_STATE
instead of:
CTA_PROTOINFO
CTA_PROTOINFO_TCP_STATE

As Henrik Nordstrom pointed out, all our efforts with "split endian" (i.e.
host byte order tags, net byte order values) are useless, unless a parser
can determine whether an attribute is nested or not.
This patch steals the highest bit of nfattr.nfa_type to indicate whether
the data payload contains a nested nfattr (1) or not (0).
This will break userspace compatibility, but luckily no kernel with
nfnetlink was released so far.

We used to use nested nfattr structures for ip_conntrack_expect. This is
bogus, since ip_conntrack and ip_conntrack_expect are communicated in
different netlink message types. both should be encoded at the top level
attributes, no extra nesting required. This patch addresses the issue.

Prior to this patch, every nfnetlink subsystem had to specify it's
attribute count. However, in reality the attribute count depends on
the message type within the subsystem, not the subsystem itself. This
patch moves 'attr_count' from 'struct nfnetlink_subsys' into
nfnl_callback to fix this.

Add ctnetlink subsystem for userspace-access to ip_conntrack table.
This allows reading and updating of existing entries, as well as
creating new ones (and new expect's) via nfnetlink.
Please note the 'strange' byte order: nfattr (tag+length) are in host
byte order, while the payload is always guaranteed to be in network
byte order. This allows a simple userspace process to encapsulate netlink
messages into arch-independent udp packets by just processing/swapping the
headers and not knowing anything about the actual payload.
