Further incorporation of generic irq framework. Replacing __do_IRQ()
by proper flow handler would make the irq handling path a bit simpler
and faster.
* use generic_handle_irq() instead of __do_IRQ().
* use handle_level_irq for obvious level-type irq chips.
* use handle_percpu_irq for irqs marked as IRQ_PER_CPU.
* setup .eoi routine for irq chips possibly used with handle_percpu_irq.

This is a big irq cleanup patch.
* Use set_irq_chip() to register irq_chip.
* Initialize .mask, .unmask, .mask_ack field. Functions for these
method are already exist in most case.
* Do not initialize .startup, .shutdown, .enable, .disable fields if
default routines provided by irq_chip_set_defaults() were suitable.
* Remove redundant irq_desc initializations.
* Remove unnecessary local_irq_save/local_irq_restore, spin_lock.
With this cleanup, it would be easy to switch to slightly lightwait
irq flow handlers (handle_level_irq(), etc.) instead of __do_IRQ().
Though whole this patch is quite large, changes in each irq_chip are
not quite simple. Please review and test on your platform. Thanks.

This patch introduces __pa_symbol() macro which should be used to
calculate the physical address of kernel symbols. It also relies
on RELOC_HIDE() to avoid any compiler's oddities when doing
arithmetics on symbols.

During early boot mem init, some configs couldn't use __pa() to
convert virtual into physical addresses. Specially for 64 bit
kernel cases when CONFIG_BUILD_ELF64=n. This patch make __pa()
work for _all_ configs and thus make CPHYSADDR() useless.

__pa() was used by virt_to_page() and virt_addr_valid(). These
latter are used when kernel is initialised so __pa() is not
appropriate, we use virt_to_phys() instead.
Futhermore __pa() is going to take care of CKSEG0/XKPHYS
address mix for 64 bit kernels. This makes __pa() more complex
than virt_to_phys() and this extra work is not needed by
virt_to_page() and virt_addr_valid().
Eventually it consolidates virt_to_phys() prototype by making
its argument 'const'. this avoids some warnings that was due
to some virt_to_page() usages which pass const pointer.

of old do_gettimeoffset routines to get sub-jiffies resolution from
gettimeofday(). This patch includes:

The current implementation uses a sequence of a cacheflush and a copy.
This is racy in case of a multithreaded debuggee and renders GDB
virtually unusable.
Aside this fixes a performance hog rendering access to /proc/cmdline very
slow and resulting in a enough cache stalls for the 34K AP/SP programming
model to make the bare metal code on the non-Linux VPE miss RT deadlines.
The main part of this patch was originally written by Ralf Baechle;
Atushi Nemoto did the the debugging.

If CONFIG_BUILD_ELF64 was not selected and gcc had -msym32 option
(i.e. 4.0 or newer), there is no point to use %highest, %higher for
kernel symbols.
This patch also fixes 64-bit SMTC version of get_saved_sp() which is
broken but harmless since there is no such CPUs for now.
A bonus is set_saved_sp() and SMP version of get_saved_sp() are more
readable now.

Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.
The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).
Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.
Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.
I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.
This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:

And put the old one back at the end:
set_irq_regs(old_regs);
Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().
In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:
- update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
- profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
+ update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
+ profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);
I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().
Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:
(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
the input_dev struct.
(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
pointer or not.
(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
irq_handler_t.

The stack pointer in MIPS/gcc should always 8 bytes aligned on
entry to any routines. Therefore pt_regs structure must be
aligned to 8-byte boundary too.
Instead of creating dummy fields to achieve this alignment, this
patch let gcc doing it. Therefore 'smtc_pad' field can be safely
removed.

and everything referring to it. This also removes the now-unused lib/execve.c
file that was introduced earlier.

If the PC was ret_from_irq or ret_from_exception, there will be no
more normal stackframe. Instead of stopping the unwinding, use PC and
RA saved by an exception handler to continue unwinding into the
interrupted context. This also simplifies the CONFIG_STACKTRACE code.

On systems running with virtual cpus there is optimization potential in
regard to spinlocks and rw-locks. If the virtual cpu that has taken a lock
is known to a cpu that wants to acquire the same lock it is beneficial to
yield the timeslice of the virtual cpu in favour of the cpu that has the
lock (directed yield).
With CONFIG_PREEMPT="n" this can be implemented by the architecture without
common code changes. Powerpc already does this.
With CONFIG_PREEMPT="y" the lock loops are coded with _raw_spin_trylock,
_raw_read_trylock and _raw_write_trylock in kernel/spinlock.c. If the lock
could not be taken cpu_relax is called. A directed yield is not possible
because cpu_relax doesn't know anything about the lock. To be able to
yield the lock in favour of the current lock holder variants of cpu_relax
for spinlocks and rw-locks are needed. The new _raw_spin_relax,
_raw_read_relax and _raw_write_relax primitives differ from cpu_relax
insofar that they have an argument: a pointer to the lock structure.

MIPS is the only port to call its fstatat()-related syscalls
"__NR_fstatat". Now I can see why that might be seen as every
other port being wrong, but I think for o32, it is at best confusing.
__NR_fstat provides a plain (32-bit) stat while __NR_fstatat provides a
64-bit stat. Changing the name to __NR_fstatat64 would make things more
explicit, match x86, and make the glibc port slightly easier.
The current name is more appropriate for n32 and n64, but it would be
appropriate for other 64-bit targets too, and those targets have chosen
to call it __NR_newfstatat instead. Using the same name for MIPS would
again be more consistent and make the glibc port slightly easier.
I'm not wedded to this idea if the current names are preferred,
but FWIW...

The code in pgtable-64.h assumes TASK_SIZE is always bigger than a first
level PGDIR_SIZE. This is not the case for 64K pages, where task size is
40 bits (1TB) and a pgd entry can map 42 bits. This leads to
USER_PTRS_PER_PGD being zero for 64K pages.

Atlas maps its RTC chip in the host mmio space rather than using the
"traditional" location in the PCI/ISA port space. A change that has
happened to the generic RTC header requires to define ARCH_RTC_LOCATION
now.

One of the changes necessary for shared page tables is to standardize the
pxx_page macros. pte_page and pmd_page have always returned the struct
page associated with their entry, while pte_page_kernel and pmd_page_kernel
have returned the kernel virtual address. pud_page and pgd_page, on the
other hand, return the kernel virtual address.
Shared page tables needs pud_page and pgd_page to return the actual page
structures. There are very few actual users of these functions, so it is
simple to standardize their usage.
Since this is basic cleanup, I am submitting these changes as a standalone
patch. Per Hugh Dickins' comments about it, I am also changing the
pxx_page_kernel macros to pxx_page_vaddr to clarify their meaning.

MIPS asm/page.h unconditionally includes <asm-generic/memory_model.h>, which
doesn't exist in userspace. Move an #endif /* __KERNEL__ */ down a few lines
to prevent that.
Also, remove the broken definition of PAGE_SIZE which is never going to be
correct -- in the absence of PAGE_SIZE, non-broken userspace will fall back to
using sysconf() or getpagesize() instead.

set_wmb should not be used in the kernel because it just confuses the
code more and has no benefit. Since it is not currently used in the
kernel this patch removes it so that new code does not include it.
All archs define set_wmb(var, value) to do { var = value; wmb(); }
while(0) except ia64 and sparc which use a mb() instead. But this is
still moot since it is not used anyway.
Hasn't been tested on any archs but x86 and x86_64 (and only compiled
tested)

This patch implements an API whereby an application can determine the
label of its peer's Unix datagram sockets via the auxiliary data mechanism of
recvmsg.
Patch purpose:
This patch enables a security-aware application to retrieve the
security context of the peer of a Unix datagram socket. The application
can then use this security context to determine the security context for
processing on behalf of the peer who sent the packet.
Patch design and implementation:
The design and implementation is very similar to the UDP case for INET
sockets. Basically we build upon the existing Unix domain socket API for
retrieving user credentials. Linux offers the API for obtaining user
credentials via ancillary messages (i.e., out of band/control messages
that are bundled together with a normal message). To retrieve the security
context, the application first indicates to the kernel such desire by
setting the SO_PASSSEC option via getsockopt. Then the application
retrieves the security context using the auxiliary data mechanism.
An example server application for Unix datagram socket should look like this:

sock_setsockopt is enhanced with a new socket option SOCK_PASSSEC to allow
a server socket to receive security context of the peer.
Testing:
We have tested the patch by setting up Unix datagram client and server
applications. We verified that the server can retrieve the security context
using the auxiliary data mechanism of recvmsg.

FIXADDR_TOP is used for HIGHMEM and for upper limit of vmalloc area on
32bit kernel. TX39XX and TX49XX have "reserved" segment in CKSEG3
area. 0xff000000-0xff3fffff on TX49XX and 0xff000000-0xfffeffff on
TX39XX are reserved (unmapped, uncached) therefore can not be used as
mapped area.

I'm testing glibc on MIPS64, little-endian, N32, O32 and N64 multilibs.
Among the NPTL test failures seen are some arising from sigsuspend problems
for N32: it blocks the wrong signals, so SIGCANCEL (SIGRTMIN) is blocked
despite glibc's carefully excluding it from sets of signals to block.
Specifically, testing suggests it blocks signal N^32 instead of signal N,
so (in the example tested) blocking SIGUSR1 (17) blocks signal 49 instead.
glibc's sigset_t uses an array of unsigned long, as does the kernel.
In both cases, signal N+1 is represented as
(1UL << (N % (8 * sizeof (unsigned long)))) in word number
(N / (8 * sizeof (unsigned long))).
Thus the N32 glibc uses an array of 32-bit words and the N64 kernel uses an
array of 64-bit words. For little-endian, the layout is the same, with
signals 1-32 in the first 4 bytes, signals 33-64 in the second, etc.; for
big-endian, userspace has that layout while in the kernel each 8 bytes have
the two halves swapped from the userspace layout.
The N32 sigsuspend syscall uses sigset_from_compat to convert the userspace
sigset to kernel format. If __COMPAT_ENDIAN_SWAP__ is *not* set, this uses
logic of the form
set->sig[0] = compat->sig[0] | (((long)compat->sig[1]) << 32 )
to convert the userspace sigset to a kernel one. This looks correct to me
for both big and little endian, given that in userspace compat->sig[1] will
represent signals 33-64, and so will the high 32 bits of set->sig[0] in the
kernel. If however __COMPAT_ENDIAN_SWAP__ *is* set, as it is for
__MIPSEL__, it uses
set->sig[0] = compat->sig[1] | (((long)compat->sig[0]) << 32 );
which seems incorrect for both big and little endian, and would
explain the observed symptoms.
This code is the only use of __COMPAT_ENDIAN_SWAP__, so if incorrect
then that macro serves no purpose, in which case something like the
following patch would seem appropriate to remove it.

VGA_MAP_MEM translates to ioremap() on some architectures. It makes sense
to do this to vga_vram_base, because we're going to access memory between
vga_vram_base and vga_vram_end.
But it doesn't really make sense to map starting at vga_vram_end, because
we aren't going to access memory starting there. On ia64, which always has
to be different, ioremapping vga_vram_end gives you something completely
incompatible with ioremapped vga_vram_start, so vga_vram_size ends up being
nonsense.
As a bonus, we often know the size up front, so we can use ioremap()
correctly, rather than giving it a zero size.

Historically plat_mem_setup did the entire platform initialization. This
was rather impractical because it meant plat_mem_setup had to get away
without any kind of memory allocator. To keep old code from breaking
plat_setup was just renamed to plat_setup and a second platform
initialization hook for anything else was introduced.

kern_addr_valid is currently only being used in kmem_ptr_validate which
is making some vague attempt at verfying the validity of an address.
Only IA-64, PARISC and x86-64 actually make some actual effort to verify
the validity of the pointer. Most architecture definitions of
kern_addr_valid() just define it as 1; the Alpha and CONFIG_DISCONTIGMEM
on i386 and MIPS even as 0; the 0-definition will result in
kmem_ptr_validate always failing which in turn will cause d_validate to
always fail. d_validate's only two users are smbfs and ncpfs, so the
0 definition ended breaking those ...

I found that NPTL's pthread_cond_signal() does not work properly on
kernels compiled by gcc 4.1.x. I suppose inline asm for
__futex_atomic_op() was wrong. I suppose:
1. "=&r" constraint should be used for oldval.
2. Instead of "r" (uaddr), "=R" (*uaddr) for output and "R" (*uaddr)
for input should be used.
3. "memory" should be added to the clobber list.

Move memory_present() in arch/mips/kernel/setup.c. When using sparsemem
extreme, this function does an allocate for bootmem. This would always
fail since init_bootmem hasn't been called yet.
Move memory_present after free_bootmem. This only marks actual memory
ranges as present instead of the entire address space.

Fix the non-linear memory mapping done via remap_file_pages() -- it
didn't work on any MIPS CPU because the page offset clashing with
_PAGE_FILE and some other page protection bits which should have been left
zeros for this kind of pages.

With 64-bit physical address enabled, 'swapon' was causing kernel oops on
Alchemy CPUs (MIPS32) because of the swap entry type field corrupting the
_PAGE_FILE bit in 'pte_low' field. So, switch to storing the swap entry in
'pte_high' field using all its bits except _PAGE_GLOBAL and _PAGE_VALID which
gives 25 bits for the swap entry offset.

In case of CONFIG_64BIT_PHYS_ADDR, set_pte() and pte_clear() functions
only set _PAGE_GLOBAL bit in the pte_low field of the buddy PTEs,
forgetting to propagate ito to pte_high. Thus, the both pages might not
really be made global for the CPU (since it AND's the G-bit of the
odd / even PTEs together to decide whether they're global or not). Thus,
if only a single page is allocated via vmalloc() or ioremap(), it's not
really global for CPU (and it must be, since this is kernel mapping),
and thus its ASID is compared against the current process' one -- so,
we'll get into trouble sooner or later... Also, pte_none() will fail
on global pages because _PAGE_GLOBAL bit is set in both pte_low and
pte_high, and pte_val() will return u64 value consisting of those fields
concateneted.

With recent rewrite for generic bitops, fls() for 32bit kernel with
MIPS64_CPU is broken. Also, ffs(), fls() should be defined the same
way as the libc and compiler built-in routines (returns int instead of
unsigned long).

Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for
each arch. Its definition is sometimes configurable. Indeed, ia64 defines 5
NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree. But it looks a bit messy.
SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has
been changeable by config. Suitable node's number may be changed in the
future even if it is other architecture. So, I wrote configurable node's
number.
This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi
nodes except ia64. But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary.
On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2
config. But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too. So, I
changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT. It
would be simpler.

This patchset provides a new (written from scratch) implementation of robust
futexes, called "lightweight robust futexes". We believe this new
implementation is faster and simpler than the vma-based robust futex solutions
presented before, and we'd like this patchset to be adopted in the upstream
kernel. This is version 1 of the patchset.
Background
----------
What are robust futexes? To answer that, we first need to understand what
futexes are: normal futexes are special types of locks that in the
noncontended case can be acquired/released from userspace without having to
enter the kernel.
A futex is in essence a user-space address, e.g. a 32-bit lock variable
field. If userspace notices contention (the lock is already owned and someone
else wants to grab it too) then the lock is marked with a value that says
"there's a waiter pending", and the sys_futex(FUTEX_WAIT) syscall is used to
wait for the other guy to release it. The kernel creates a 'futex queue'
internally, so that it can later on match up the waiter with the waker -
without them having to know about each other. When the owner thread releases
the futex, it notices (via the variable value) that there were waiter(s)
pending, and does the sys_futex(FUTEX_WAKE) syscall to wake them up. Once all
waiters have taken and released the lock, the futex is again back to
'uncontended' state, and there's no in-kernel state associated with it. The
kernel completely forgets that there ever was a futex at that address. This
method makes futexes very lightweight and scalable.
"Robustness" is about dealing with crashes while holding a lock: if a process
exits prematurely while holding a pthread_mutex_t lock that is also shared
with some other process (e.g. yum segfaults while holding a pthread_mutex_t,
or yum is kill -9-ed), then waiters for that lock need to be notified that the
last owner of the lock exited in some irregular way.
To solve such types of problems, "robust mutex" userspace APIs were created:
pthread_mutex_lock() returns an error value if the owner exits prematurely -
and the new owner can decide whether the data protected by the lock can be
recovered safely.
There is a big conceptual problem with futex based mutexes though: it is the
kernel that destroys the owner task (e.g. due to a SEGFAULT), but the kernel
cannot help with the cleanup: if there is no 'futex queue' (and in most cases
there is none, futexes being fast lightweight locks) then the kernel has no
information to clean up after the held lock! Userspace has no chance to clean
up after the lock either - userspace is the one that crashes, so it has no
opportunity to clean up. Catch-22.
In practice, when e.g. yum is kill -9-ed (or segfaults), a system reboot is
needed to release that futex based lock. This is one of the leading
bugreports against yum.
To solve this problem, 'Robust Futex' patches were created and presented on
lkml: the one written by Todd Kneisel and David Singleton is the most advanced
at the moment. These patches all tried to extend the futex abstraction by
registering futex-based locks in the kernel - and thus give the kernel a
chance to clean up.
E.g. in David Singleton's robust-futex-6.patch, there are 3 new syscall
variants to sys_futex(): FUTEX_REGISTER, FUTEX_DEREGISTER and FUTEX_RECOVER.
The kernel attaches such robust futexes to vmas (via
vma->vm_file->f_mapping->robust_head), and at do_exit() time, all vmas are
searched to see whether they have a robust_head set.
Lots of work went into the vma-based robust-futex patch, and recently it has
improved significantly, but unfortunately it still has two fundamental
problems left:
- they have quite complex locking and race scenarios. The vma-based
patches had been pending for years, but they are still not completely
reliable.
- they have to scan _every_ vma at sys_exit() time, per thread!
The second disadvantage is a real killer: pthread_exit() takes around 1
microsecond on Linux, but with thousands (or tens of thousands) of vmas every
pthread_exit() takes a millisecond or more, also totally destroying the CPU's
L1 and L2 caches!
This is very much noticeable even for normal process sys_exit_group() calls:
the kernel has to do the vma scanning unconditionally! (this is because the
kernel has no knowledge about how many robust futexes there are to be cleaned
up, because a robust futex might have been registered in another task, and the
futex variable might have been simply mmap()-ed into this process's address
space).
This huge overhead forced the creation of CONFIG_FUTEX_ROBUST, but worse than
that: the overhead makes robust futexes impractical for any type of generic
Linux distribution.
So it became clear to us, something had to be done. Last week, when Thomas
Gleixner tried to fix up the vma-based robust futex patch in the -rt tree, he
found a handful of new races and we were talking about it and were analyzing
the situation. At that point a fundamentally different solution occured to
me. This patchset (written in the past couple of days) implements that new
solution. Be warned though - the patchset does things we normally dont do in
Linux, so some might find the approach disturbing. Parental advice
recommended ;-)
New approach to robust futexes
------------------------------
At the heart of this new approach there is a per-thread private list of robust
locks that userspace is holding (maintained by glibc) - which userspace list
is registered with the kernel via a new syscall [this registration happens at
most once per thread lifetime]. At do_exit() time, the kernel checks this
user-space list: are there any robust futex locks to be cleaned up?
In the common case, at do_exit() time, there is no list registered, so the
cost of robust futexes is just a simple current->robust_list != NULL
comparison. If the thread has registered a list, then normally the list is
empty. If the thread/process crashed or terminated in some incorrect way then
the list might be non-empty: in this case the kernel carefully walks the list
[not trusting it], and marks all locks that are owned by this thread with the
FUTEX_OWNER_DEAD bit, and wakes up one waiter (if any).
The list is guaranteed to be private and per-thread, so it's lockless. There
is one race possible though: since adding to and removing from the list is
done after the futex is acquired by glibc, there is a few instructions window
for the thread (or process) to die there, leaving the futex hung. To protect
against this possibility, userspace (glibc) also maintains a simple per-thread
'list_op_pending' field, to allow the kernel to clean up if the thread dies
after acquiring the lock, but just before it could have added itself to the
list. Glibc sets this list_op_pending field before it tries to acquire the
futex, and clears it after the list-add (or list-remove) has finished.
That's all that is needed - all the rest of robust-futex cleanup is done in
userspace [just like with the previous patches].
Ulrich Drepper has implemented the necessary glibc support for this new
mechanism, which fully enables robust mutexes. (Ulrich plans to commit these
changes to glibc-HEAD later today.)
Key differences of this userspace-list based approach, compared to the vma
based method:
- it's much, much faster: at thread exit time, there's no need to loop
over every vma (!), which the VM-based method has to do. Only a very
simple 'is the list empty' op is done.
- no VM changes are needed - 'struct address_space' is left alone.
- no registration of individual locks is needed: robust mutexes dont need
any extra per-lock syscalls. Robust mutexes thus become a very lightweight
primitive - so they dont force the application designer to do a hard choice
between performance and robustness - robust mutexes are just as fast.
- no per-lock kernel allocation happens.
- no resource limits are needed.
- no kernel-space recovery call (FUTEX_RECOVER) is needed.
- the implementation and the locking is "obvious", and there are no
interactions with the VM.
Performance
-----------
I have benchmarked the time needed for the kernel to process a list of 1
million (!) held locks, using the new method [on a 2GHz CPU]:
- with FUTEX_WAIT set [contended mutex]: 130 msecs
- without FUTEX_WAIT set [uncontended mutex]: 30 msecs
I have also measured an approach where glibc does the lock notification [which
it currently does for !pshared robust mutexes], and that took 256 msecs -
clearly slower, due to the 1 million FUTEX_WAKE syscalls userspace had to do.
(1 million held locks are unheard of - we expect at most a handful of locks to
be held at a time. Nevertheless it's nice to know that this approach scales
nicely.)
Implementation details
----------------------
The patch adds two new syscalls: one to register the userspace list, and one
to query the registered list pointer:

List registration is very fast: the pointer is simply stored in
current->robust_list. [Note that in the future, if robust futexes become
widespread, we could extend sys_clone() to register a robust-list head for new
threads, without the need of another syscall.]
So there is virtually zero overhead for tasks not using robust futexes, and
even for robust futex users, there is only one extra syscall per thread
lifetime, and the cleanup operation, if it happens, is fast and
straightforward. The kernel doesnt have any internal distinction between
robust and normal futexes.
If a futex is found to be held at exit time, the kernel sets the highest bit
of the futex word:

and wakes up the next futex waiter (if any). User-space does the rest of
the cleanup.
Otherwise, robust futexes are acquired by glibc by putting the TID into the
futex field atomically. Waiters set the FUTEX_WAITERS bit:

Testing, architecture support
-----------------------------
I've tested the new syscalls on x86 and x86_64, and have made sure the parsing
of the userspace list is robust [ ;-) ] even if the list is deliberately
corrupted.
i386 and x86_64 syscalls are wired up at the moment, and Ulrich has tested the
new glibc code (on x86_64 and i386), and it works for his robust-mutex
testcases.
All other architectures should build just fine too - but they wont have the
new syscalls yet.
Architectures need to implement the new futex_atomic_cmpxchg_inuser() inline
function before writing up the syscalls (that function returns -ENOSYS right
now).
This patch:
Add placeholder futex_atomic_cmpxchg_inuser() implementations to every
architecture that supports futexes. It returns -ENOSYS.

Bitmap functions for the minix filesystem and the ext2 filesystem except
ext2_set_bit_atomic() and ext2_clear_bit_atomic() do not require the atomic
guarantees.
But these are defined by using atomic bit operations on several architectures.
(cris, frv, h8300, ia64, m32r, m68k, m68knommu, mips, s390, sh, sh64, sparc,
sparc64, v850, and xtensa)
This patch switches to non atomic bit operation.

Add blkcnt_t as the type of inode.i_blocks. This enables you to make the size
of blkcnt_t either 4 bytes or 8 bytes on 32 bits architecture with CONFIG_LSF.

Implement the half-closed devices notifiation, by adding a new POLLRDHUP
(and its alias EPOLLRDHUP) bit to the existing poll/select sets. Since the
existing POLLHUP handling, that does not report correctly half-closed
devices, was feared to be changed, this implementation leaves the current
POLLHUP reporting unchanged and simply add a new bit that is set in the few
places where it makes sense. The same thing was discussed and conceptually
agreed quite some time ago:

Since this new event bit is added to the existing Linux poll infrastruture,
even the existing poll/select system calls will be able to use it. As far
as the existing POLLHUP handling, the patch leaves it as is. The
pollrdhup-2.6.16.rc5-0.10.diff defines the POLLRDHUP for all the existing
archs and sets the bit in the six relevant files. The other attached diff
is the simple change required to sys/epoll.h to add the EPOLLRDHUP
definition.
There is "a stupid program" to test POLLRDHUP delivery here:

1. Move ioswab*() and __mem_ioswab*() to mangle-port.h. This gets rid
of CONFIG_SGI_IP22 from include/asm-mips/io.h.
2. Pass a virtual address to *ioswab*(). Then we can provide
mach-specific *ioswab*() and can do every evil thing based on its
argument. It could be useful on machines which have regions with
different endian conversion scheme.
3. Call __swizzle_addr*() _after_ adding mips_io_port_base. This
unifies the meaning of the argument of __swizzle_addr*() (always
virtual address). Then mach-specific __swizzle_addr*() can do every
evil thing based on the argument.

sb1250_gettimeoffset() simply reads the current cpu 0 timer remaining
value, however once this counter reaches 0 and the interrupt is raised,
it immediately resets and begins to count down again.
If sb1250_gettimeoffset() is called on cpu 1 via do_gettimeofday() after
the timer has reset but prior to cpu 0 processing the interrupt and
taking write_seqlock() in timer_interrupt() it will return a full value
(or close to it) causing time to jump backwards 1ms. Once cpu 0 handles
the interrupt and timer_interrupt() gets far enough along it will jump
forward 1ms.
Fix this problem by implementing mips_hpt_*() on sb1250 using a spare
timer unrelated to the existing periodic interrupt timers. It runs at
1Mhz with a full 23bit counter. This eliminated the custom
do_gettimeoffset() for sb1250 and allowed use of the generic
fixed_rate_gettimeoffset() using mips_hpt_*() and timerhi/timerlo.

If a call to set_io_port_base() was being followed by usage of
mips_io_port_base in the same function gcc was possibly using the old
value due to some clever abuse of const. Adding a barrier will keep
the optimization and result in correct code with latest gcc.

If dcache_size != icache_size or dcache_size != scache_size, or

A recent change requires cpu_possible_map to be initialized before
smp_sched_init() but most MIPS platforms were initializing their
processors in the prom_prepare_cpus callback of smp_prepare_cpus. The
simple fix of calling prom_prepare_cpus from one of the earlier SMP
initialization hooks doesn't work well either since IPIs may require
init_IRQ() to have completed, so bit the bullet and split
prom_prepare_cpus into two initialization functions, plat_smp_setup
which is called early from setup_arch and plat_prepare_cpus called where
prom_prepare_cpus used to be called.

Currently, copy-on-write may change the physical address of a page even if the
user requested that the page is pinned in memory (either by mlock or by
get_user_pages). This happens if the process forks meanwhile, and the parent
writes to that page. As a result, the page is orphaned: in case of
get_user_pages, the application will never see any data hardware DMA's into
this page after the COW. In case of mlock'd memory, the parent is not getting
the realtime/security benefits of mlock.
In particular, this affects the Infiniband modules which do DMA from and into
user pages all the time.
This patch adds madvise options to control whether memory range is inherited
across fork. Useful e.g. for when hardware is doing DMA from/into these
pages. Could also be useful to an application wanting to speed up its forks
by cutting large areas out of consideration.

This patch caused a miscompilation of the restore_gp_regs() block
in restore_sigcontext(). This was in a 32-bit kernel compiled with
GCC CVS head.
restore_gp_regs() copies 64-bit user fields into 32-bit variables,
and in this combination, the new __get_user_asm_ll32() clobbers too
many registers. It says:

I've noticed that PCI clock was incorrectly reported as 66 MHz while being
mere 33 MHz on RBTX4937 board -- this was due to the different encoding of
the PCI divisor field in CCFG register between TX4927 and TX4937 chips...
Also, RBTX49x7 was printed out as a CPU name (e.g., "CPU is RBTX4937");
and some debug printk() were duplicating each other...

If mfc0 $12 follows store and the mfc0 is last instruction of a
page and fetching the next instruction causes TLB miss, the result
of the mfc0 might wrongly contain EXL bit.

Workaround: mask EXL bit of the result or place a nop before mfc0. It
doesn't harm to always clear those bits, so we change the code to do so.

This is the latest version of the scheduler cache-hot-auto-tune patch.
The first problem was that detection time scaled with O(N^2), which is
unacceptable on larger SMP and NUMA systems. To solve this:
- I've added a 'domain distance' function, which is used to cache
measurement results. Each distance is only measured once. This means
that e.g. on NUMA distances of 0, 1 and 2 might be measured, on HT
distances 0 and 1, and on SMP distance 0 is measured. The code walks
the domain tree to determine the distance, so it automatically follows
whatever hierarchy an architecture sets up. This cuts down on the boot
time significantly and removes the O(N^2) limit. The only assumption
is that migration costs can be expressed as a function of domain
distance - this covers the overwhelming majority of existing systems,
and is a good guess even for more assymetric systems.
[ People hacking systems that have assymetries that break this
assumption (e.g. different CPU speeds) should experiment a bit with
the cpu_distance() function. Adding a ->migration_distance factor to
the domain structure would be one possible solution - but lets first
see the problem systems, if they exist at all. Lets not overdesign. ]
Another problem was that only a single cache-size was used for measuring
the cost of migration, and most architectures didnt set that variable
up. Furthermore, a single cache-size does not fit NUMA hierarchies with
L3 caches and does not fit HT setups, where different CPUs will often
have different 'effective cache sizes'. To solve this problem:
- Instead of relying on a single cache-size provided by the platform and
sticking to it, the code now auto-detects the 'effective migration
cost' between two measured CPUs, via iterating through a wide range of
cachesizes. The code searches for the maximum migration cost, which
occurs when the working set of the test-workload falls just below the
'effective cache size'. I.e. real-life optimized search is done for
the maximum migration cost, between two real CPUs.
This, amongst other things, has the positive effect hat if e.g. two
CPUs share a L2/L3 cache, a different (and accurate) migration cost
will be found than between two CPUs on the same system that dont share
any caches.
(The reliable measurement of migration costs is tricky - see the source
for details.)
Furthermore i've added various boot-time options to override/tune
migration behavior.
Firstly, there's a blanket override for autodetection:
migration_cost=1000,2000,3000
will override the depth 0/1/2 values with 1msec/2msec/3msec values.
Secondly, there's a global factor that can be used to increase (or
decrease) the autodetected values:
migration_factor=120
will increase the autodetected values by 20%. This option is useful to
tune things in a workload-dependent way - e.g. if a workload is
cache-insensitive then CPU utilization can be maximized by specifying
migration_factor=0.
I've tested the autodetection code quite extensively on x86, on 3
P3/Xeon/2MB, and the autodetected values look pretty good:

Here it can be seen that there is no migration cost between two HT
siblings (CPU#0/2 and CPU#1/3 are separate physical CPUs). A fast memory

Gcc has a tradition of misscompiling the previous construct using the
address of a label as argument to inline assembler. Gas otoh has the
annoying difference between la and dla which are only usable for 32-bit
rsp. 64-bit code, so can't be used without conditional compilation.
The alterantive is switching the assembler to 64-bit code which happens
to work right even for 32-bit code ...

local_irq_restore uses di which saves the whole status content, not
just the IE bit resulting in local_irq_restore() to fail. This only
happens if both CONFIG_CPU_MIPSR2 and CONFIG_IRQ_CPU are enabled.

USB OpenHCI host controller on Au1550 only decodes memory addresses from
0x14020000 to 0x1407FFFF according to the databook, which gives 0x60000
(on the prior Au1x00 chips the map size was 1MB).

used_dsp was meant to be used like used_math - but since the FPU context
is small and lazy context switching is a stupid idea on multiprocessors
this idea only got halfway implemented and those bits are were now
breaking ptrace.

add the per-arch mutex.h files for the remaining architectures.
We default to asm-generic/mutex-dec.h, because that performs
quite well on most arches. Arches that do not have atomic
decrement/increment instructions should switch to mutex-xchg.h
instead. Arches can also provide their own implementation for
the mutex fastpath primitives.

Several counters already have the need to use 64 atomic variables on 64 bit
platforms (see mm_counter_t in sched.h). We have to do ugly ifdefs to fall
back to 32 bit atomic on 32 bit platforms.
The VM statistics patch that I am working on will also make more extensive
use of atomic64.
This patch introduces a new type atomic_long_t by providing definitions in
asm-generic/atomic.h that works similar to the c "long" type. Its 32 bits
on 32 bit platforms and 64 bits on 64 bit platforms.
Also cleans up the determination of the mm_counter_t in sched.h.

Here is the patch to implement madvise(MADV_REMOVE) - which frees up a
given range of pages & its associated backing store. Current
implementation supports only shmfs/tmpfs and other filesystems return
-ENOSYS.
"Some app allocates large tmpfs files, then when some task quits and some
client disconnect, some memory can be released. However the only way to
release tmpfs-swap is to MADV_REMOVE". - Andrea Arcangeli
Databases want to use this feature to drop a section of their bufferpool
(shared memory segments) - without writing back to disk/swap space.
This feature is also useful for supporting hot-plug memory on UML.
Concerns raised by Andrew Morton:
- "We have no plan for holepunching! If we _do_ have such a plan (or
might in the future) then what would the API look like? I think
sys_holepunch(fd, start, len), so we should start out with that."
- Using madvise is very weird, because people will ask "why do I need to
mmap my file before I can stick a hole in it?"
- None of the other madvise operations call into the filesystem in this
manner. A broad question is: is this capability an MM operation or a
filesytem operation? truncate, for example, is a filesystem operation
which sometimes has MM side-effects. madvise is an mm operation and with
this patch, it gains FS side-effects, only they're really, really
significant ones."
Comments:
- Andrea suggested the fs operation too but then it's more efficient to
have it as a mm operation with fs side effects, because they don't
immediatly know fd and physical offset of the range. It's possible to
fixup in userland and to use the fs operation but it's more expensive,
the vmas are already in the kernel and we can use them.
Short term plan & Future Direction:
- We seem to need this interface only for shmfs/tmpfs files in the short
term. We have to add hooks into the filesystem for correctness and
completeness. This is what this patch does.
- In the future, plan is to support both fs and mmap apis also. This
also involves (other) filesystem specific functions to be implemented.
- Current patch doesn't support VM_NONLINEAR - which can be addressed in
the future.

Changes here include removing all of CONFIG_PM while it is being repeatedly
smacked with a lead pipe, moving the BURSTMODE param to a #define (it should
be defined almost always anyway), fixing the rqsize stuff, pulling ide_ioreg_t,
and general cleanups and whatnot.

Introduce an atomic_inc_not_zero operation. Make this a special case of
atomic_add_unless because lockless pagecache actually wants
atomic_inc_not_negativeone due to its offset refcount.
